Mumbai : Strict action is being continuously taken under the NDPS Act, 1985 against those involved in the sale and purchase of narcotic substances in the Thane city area. In the financial year 2024–2025 (up to June), drugs and related material worth ₹30.26 crore were seized, and 446 individuals were arrested, according to information provided by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Thane City Commissionerate.
Additionally, during the same period, items like banned gutkha and foreign cigarettes were confiscated under operations conducted by the Thane Police Commissionerate. These seizures amounted to ₹5.89 crore, and 283 people were arrested.
The Anti-Narcotics Cell of the Thane Police is actively and consistently cracking down on drug trafficking within its jurisdiction. To address the growing concern of drug abuse among school and college students, awareness programs and seminars are being organized to educate them about the harmful effects of narcotics.
In 2024 and 2025, the Commissionerate launched action against the sale and distribution of ganja (cannabis), mephedrone, charas, codeine-based cough syrups, prescription drug tablets, cocaine, and other banned narcotics.
To create greater awareness about the dangers of drug use, Thane Police Commissioner Ashutosh Dumbre initiated outreach seminars across 29 schools and colleges in the area. Around 3,500 students were educated through these programs. Pamphlets were distributed in public places such as railway stations, bus stands, rickshaw stands, and in school and college premises.
To amplify the awareness efforts, digital advertisements about the ill effects of narcotics are being broadcast in public places like railway stations, malls, and cinemas. Anti-drug banners and posters have also been installed at various locations across the city.
For college students, an essay competition on the topic “Harmful Effects of Drug Abuse” was organized, in which 120 students participated.
In line with the directives from the Home Department, the police have conducted secret raids, registered criminal cases, and inspected permits at various levels. These operations are helping curb illegal drug activities. The Assistant Commissioner also confirmed that such efforts will be intensified further in the future to completely eliminate these unlawful practices.
