NYPD Officer Among Five Dead in Midtown Manhattan Office Shooting; Shooter Neutralized
New York — A shooting incident inside a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper on Monday evening has left five people dead, including a New York Police Department (NYPD) officer, and several others injured. The lone gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police confirmed.
The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. at 345 Park Avenue — a 44-story building that houses high-profile offices including the National Football League (NFL), investment firm Blackstone, KPMG, Deutsche Bank, and the Consulate General of Ireland. The building is owned by Rudin Management, one of New York’s oldest real estate companies.
According to law enforcement sources, Tamura entered the building armed with a long rifle and opened fire indiscriminately. Surveillance footage showed the suspect wearing sunglasses and carrying the weapon as he approached the entrance.
Among the victims was NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, who was shot in the back while attempting to protect civilians. He later succumbed to his injuries. In a statement, the NYPD said, “Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department. We will forever honor his legacy.”
Two civilians were also fatally shot, while several others, including a second police officer, sustained injuries. One civilian remains in critical condition.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the shooter had been “neutralized” and the situation is under control. “At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been killed,” she stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The FBI has joined the investigation, with Deputy Director Dan Bongino noting that agents are assisting NYPD efforts. “The motive is currently under investigation,” Bongino said.
Emergency response teams, including the NYPD Bomb Squad and New York Fire Department, were deployed to the scene. Mayor Eric Adams urged the public to avoid the area and instructed residents nearby to shelter in place while the investigation continues. “We are conducting a thorough search of the premises,” Adams said on X.
Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani also expressed condolences online, stating, “I am heartbroken by the horrific shooting in Midtown. My thoughts are with the victims and their families.”
Authorities are continuing their investigation into Tamura’s motives, and more information is expected to emerge in the coming days.
