What happened on August 14, 1947 was a national tragedy that can’t be forgotten
Lucknow, Aug 2025 : On August 14, 1947, the partition marked one of the darkest days in Indian history, uprooting millions and leaving deep scars on countless lives, said Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Speaking at a seminar held at Bhagidari Bhawan to mark Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on Thursday, CM said that approximately 1.5 to 2 crore people were displaced and nearly 20 lakh were massacred, and millions of Indians were rendered homeless, forced to wander in search for settlement during the tragedy.
The horror of the tragedy left wounds so deep that they remain etched in Indian society and will never fade from their memory, he added. Before speaking at the event, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held a silent foot march.
Chief minister Yogi Adityanath said that what happened on August 14, 1947, was a national tragedy that can never be forgotten. Millions were displaced from their homes, families were torn apart, and at that time the ruling powers deceived the public by portraying the partition as merely an administrative decision. The partition was a moral and human crime, which Congress carried out under its policy of appeasement.
Remembering the massacres carried out in 1947, the Chief Minister said that it was not merely an administrative decision, but the result of barbarity, in which millions of Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains were evicted from their roots.
During this period, women faced extreme brutality, with no chance to protect their dignity. “Partition gave birth to a monster like Pakistan, which even today is involved in various conspiracies to harm Hindustan,” he remarked. CM Yogi directly attacked Congress, saying that the party presented India’s partition as if it were the division of property between two brothers. Since the 1947 partition, Congress’s appeasement policy has ruined the country, and even today the same Congress is trying to push the nation towards division, he asserted.
The CM said that Congress is the same party that strangled the country’s Constitution and murdered democracy under the cover of Emergency. It is the same party that orchestrated the massacre of Sikhs in 1984, and even today, instead of taking the responsibility for its leaders’ wrong decisions, it is trying to mislead the public.
The Chief Minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that in 2021, PM Modi started Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on August 15. He said PM Modi gave citizens an opportunity to understand the horrific conditions during partition and what followed afterwards. “This day reminds us of the dreadful events of 1947, when millions lost their lives and many who were forced to leave their homes,’ he remarked.
The Uttar Pradesh government has prepared a comprehensive plan for the families affected by partition. He said they are preparing a large relief package for those who were deprived of citizenship during partition. The UP government has already started the process of land allocation for families in districts like Bijnor, Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Rampur, and it will be completed soon.
The Chief Minister said that no museum, memorial, or tribute site has ever been built for the victims of the 1947 Partition. “We are all grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for initiating the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day and announcing the establishment of a museum and digital archive for affected families.
He said Congress and other opposition parties should apologize for the 1947 Partition, the 1984 Sikh massacre, the Emergency of 1975, and for implementing Article 370 in Kashmir.
Supporting the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), he said they are committed to giving respect and citizenship to refugees who came from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan after partition. The Chief Minister paid his respects to the victims of the partition tragedy. He said this day is a reminder to all the citizens that we must always be prepared to protect the unity and integrity of India.
On this occasion, Deputy CMs Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Dinesh Sharma, Minister Aseem Arun, and former Mayor Sanyukta Bhatia were present.
