AAP MP Sanjay Singh Moves Supreme Court Against Decline of Government Schools

New Delhi, Aug 2025 : The battle to save government schools in Uttar Pradesh has now reached the doors of the Supreme Court, with Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh emerging as the key face of this fight. Singh has not only raised the voice of the state’s children but has also personally filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the merger of thousands of schools. He argues that the future of innocent children in Uttar Pradesh cannot be turned into a political experiment, and any compromise with their right to education will not be tolerated.

Today, August 18, the petition is being heard in the Supreme Court before a bench of Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice A.G. Masih. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal will present the plight of parents and children in court. Singh’s move has become a ray of hope for millions of families whose children study in government schools and whose future may be affected by the state government’s decision.

The Uttar Pradesh government has initiated the closure of over 5,000 schools under the guise of “merger.” This will impact around 27,000 primary schools, eliminate 1,35,000 assistant teacher posts and 27,000 headmaster positions, while also putting the jobs of para-teachers and cooks at risk. This situation threatens not only the education system but also the livelihoods of lakhs of families.

In the past decade, the number of government schools in India has declined by 8%, while private schools have grown by nearly 15%. Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have seen the sharpest fall, clearly showing how public education is being weakened across the country, with UP becoming the starkest example. In contrast, the Aam Aadmi Party governments in Delhi and Punjab have transformed government schools into world-class institutions. Delhi’s model has become a benchmark nationwide, where even the poorest child gets access to modern facilities and quality education. It is this vision that has made Sanjay Singh’s fight resonate with parents and children across India.

Through campaigns, Singh has mobilized parents and teachers across Uttar Pradesh and is now fighting their battle in the Supreme Court as well. According to him, shutting down government schools is like snatching away children’s dreams and attacking the future of generations to come.

Now, the entire nation’s eyes are on the Supreme Court hearing. The verdict will not only decide the fate of government schools in Uttar Pradesh but could also shape the future of public education across the country. Sanjay Singh has emerged as a true champion of children and parents, proving that the fight for education is the greatest form of public service.
