Mizo Youth Excel in Assam Regiment Recruitment under Sports Quota
Aizawl, Aug 2025: During the Assam Regiment recruitment drive held in Shillong, Meghalaya, from August 11–13, several Mizo youths performed remarkably well. Under the sports quota, 12 sportspersons from Mizoram successfully qualified, while another 15 candidates are currently awaiting medical review.
In the general Agniveer recruitment, 163 youths from Mizoram have cleared the process so far, while 39 others are under medical review.

Earlier, on July 13, 2025, Sports & Youth Services Minister Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar met with Brigadier Vikas Rai Shandilya, Commandant of the Assam Regimental Centre, Shillong, in Aizawl. During the meeting, they discussed the challenges faced by Mizo candidates in securing sufficient representation in the Assam Regiment. Special emphasis was placed on utilizing the sports quota to enable more talented youths from Mizoram to join the regiment.
Following this meeting, the Mizo Territorial Army Company, Aizawl, organized pre-recruitment training and orientation for aspiring candidates. As part of the screening, candidates’ documents and medical fitness were verified, alongside awareness sessions to prepare them better for the selection process. This initiative was supported and guided by Champhai South MLA, Lt. Col. Clement Lalhmingthanga, who also helped in the planning stages.

With support from the Sports & Youth Services Department and the Mizoram State Sports Council, various sports associations across the state encouraged and guided athletes to participate in the recruitment under the sports quota.
Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar expressed satisfaction that 12 sportspersons have already qualified this year, calling it a positive development. He further assured that the government will continue to push for greater opportunities in future recruitment drives so that more athletes can benefit from the quota.
Compared to previous years, the recruitment process has seen improved transparency and efficiency, with stricter screening and training. Last year, 57 candidates from Mizoram were recruited, whereas this year the number has already risen to 163 qualified candidates with the possibility of more joining after medical clearance.
The Minister, along with Champhai South MLA, noted that this significant increase highlights the effectiveness of collective efforts by the government, military authorities, and sports organizations. They expressed hope that future recruitment drives will bring even better results for Mizo youth.
Discussions were also held in the Minister’s office today with Lt. Col. Lalhmingthanga regarding further steps to enhance opportunities for Mizoram’s youth in military recruitment, particularly under the sports quota.
