Zelensky Thanks Melania Trump for Peace Letter to Putin as White House Talks Focus on Ukraine’s Future

Washington, Aug 2025 : Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky opened his one-on-one meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday with an unexpected gesture of gratitude — directed not at Trump himself, but at First Lady Melania Trump.

Zelensky revealed that he and his wife, Olena Zelenska, had been deeply moved by a letter Melania had written to Russian President Vladimir Putin, appealing for peace on behalf of children in both Ukraine and Russia. The letter, dated August 15, was delivered just days before Trump’s own summit with Putin in Anchorage, Alaska.

“Many thanks to your wife, the First Lady of the United States,” Zelensky told Trump as the meeting began. Handing the U.S. President a letter addressed to Melania, he added with a smile, “It’s not to you, it’s to your wife,” prompting laughter from Trump and members of the press.

Melania’s Plea for Peace

In her letter, Melania Trump, who grew up in communist Yugoslavia before pursuing a modeling career in the early 1990s, urged Putin to consider the plight of children caught in the ongoing war.

“Every child shares the same quiet dreams in their heart, whether born randomly into a nation’s rustic countryside or a magnificent city center. They dream of love, possibility, and safety from danger,” she wrote.

The First Lady called on Putin to safeguard the “innocence” of children in Ukraine and Russia, framing the appeal as both a parental and moral duty.

“As parents, it is our duty to nurture the next generation’s hope,” she continued. “As leaders, the responsibility to sustain our children extends beyond the comfort of a few. Undeniably, we must strive to paint a dignity-filled world for all — so that every soul may wake to peace, and so that the future itself is perfectly guarded.”

She concluded by urging Putin to act decisively. “You will do more than serve Russia alone — you serve humanity itself. Such a bold idea transcends all human division, and you, Mr. Putin, are fit to implement this vision with a stroke of a pen today. It is time.”

Zelensky and Trump at the White House

When Zelensky arrived in Washington, the personal exchange over Melania’s letter set a warmer tone for his meeting with Trump. After their private talks, the two presidents addressed reporters together. Trump said he planned to call Putin again later that day, after meeting with a larger group of European leaders who had joined Zelensky at the White House.

The European delegation included NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The leaders posed for a “family photo” before moving to the East Room for a multilateral discussion on Ukraine’s security. Zelensky described his earlier session with Trump as “productive,” while Trump suggested he would work to facilitate a direct meeting between Zelensky and Putin.

A Symbolic Start

Though Monday’s meetings produced no binding commitments, Zelensky’s public thanks to Melania Trump and Trump’s openness to continuing direct engagement with Putin underscored the symbolic weight of the day. For Zelensky, the gesture toward the First Lady was a reminder of the human toll of the conflict; for Trump, the meetings signaled an ongoing effort to position the U.S. as central to any eventual peace deal.

Whether Melania’s letter will influence Putin remains uncertain, but its unexpected role in the high-stakes diplomacy offered a rare moment of humanity amid the war’s grinding politics.
