Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin Inaugurates Renovated Air-Conditioned Shooting Floor at MGR Government Film and Television Training Institute
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru M.K. Stalin today (25.08.2025), through a virtual ceremony, inaugurated a newly renovated air-conditioned shooting floor at the campus of the Tamil Nadu Government M.G.R. Film and Television Training Institute, Taramani, Chennai. The project was completed at a total cost of ₹5.10 crore.
The M.G.R. Film and Television Training Institute, originally functioning under the Directorate of Technical Education, has now been brought under the Department of Information and Public Relations. This prestigious institute is a pioneer in providing training in film production, technical education, creative skills, and related disciplines. Its primary objective is to equip students with expertise in various aspects of film and television production.
Earlier, under the government’s special allocation of ₹1.58 crore, the institute’s auditorium, dilapidated buildings, and electrical equipment were renovated, and a new dining hall costing ₹25 lakh was also constructed for students and staff. To further raise academic standards, a team of experts was constituted, and based on their recommendations, the institute’s curriculum was upgraded. In addition, the government enhanced project grants, raising the financial assistance for final-year students’ short film projects to ₹1 lakh per team.
As part of the government’s 2022–2023 budget announcement, comprehensive renovation works were taken up at the institute. Under this, the new air-conditioned shooting floor measuring 17,517 sq. ft., hostel facilities, mock courtroom, dubbing theatre, new cooling equipment, two high-capacity power transformers (11 kv HT 500 KVA), and other electrical refurbishments were completed at a cost of ₹5.10 crore.
The Chief Minister formally inaugurated these facilities today, marking a significant milestone for the film training sector in Tamil Nadu. The renovated air-conditioned shooting floor is expected to provide immense benefits to aspiring filmmakers and students of the institute.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Minister for Tamil Development and Information Thiru M.P. Saminathan, Secretary to Government Thiru N. Muruganandam (IAS), Secretary for Tamil Development and Information Thiru K. Rajaraman (IAS), Director of Information and Public Relations Dr. R. Raveendran (IAS), Director of the Institute Thiru Trotsky Maruthu, Principal (in full additional charge) Thiru M. Baiker, and senior government officials.
