Effective Eradication of Prosopis Juliflora (Vilayati Babul) Essential – Panchayati Raj Minister Directs for Comprehensive Guidelines

Jaipur, Aug 2025 – Panchayati Raj Minister Shri Madan Dilawar instructed departmental officials to prepare detailed guidelines for uprooting Prosopis Juliflora (locally known as Vilayati Babul) along with its roots and to explore safe and practical options for its eradication. He emphasized that specific areas should be identified and work should be carried out in a phased manner.

Shri Dilawar was addressing a meeting on Tuesday at the Panchayati Raj Auditorium with representatives of the Forest Department, Rural Development, and other institutions regarding the eradication of Prosopis Juliflora in the state.

He said that the state government’s goal is not just to cut these invasive trees but to destroy their roots completely so they do not grow back. Highlighting the threat posed by this species, he noted that Vilayati Babul has spread extensively across Rajasthan and prevents other vegetation from growing in its vicinity, making effective eradication essential.

The minister pointed out that this invasive tree depletes soil fertility, damages grazing lands, and creates serious problems for farmers who face difficulties in feeding their cattle. Once a single plant grows, it multiplies rapidly, suppressing other vegetation.

He also reviewed existing legal provisions and policies related to eradication and assured that the government is making concerted efforts to remove Prosopis Juliflora, while working to overcome existing hurdles. The meeting also discussed the possible utilization of by-products such as fuel, charcoal, and animal feed.

The meeting was attended by Panchayati Raj Principal Secretary and Commissioner Dr. Jogaram, Watershed Director Shri Mohammad Junaid, Vice-Chancellor of Sri Karan Narendra Agriculture University, Jobner, Shri Balraj Singh, along with senior departmental officials and representatives of organizations working in this field.
