Hyundai Nexo Hydrogen SUV Sees Strong Sales, Group Expands $26 Billion U.S. Investment Plan
Seoul, Aug 2025 : Hyundai Motor announced on Sunday that sales of its newly face-lifted Nexo hydrogen-powered SUV have surged to nearly 7,000 units since its launch in June, significantly outpacing the performance of its predecessor.
Between June and August, sales of the upgraded hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) reached 6,767 units, according to company data. This is a sharp increase compared with the first-generation Nexo, which sold just 1,500 units during the same three-month window following its debut in 2018.
The new Nexo is designed with enhanced efficiency and performance. It offers a driving range of up to 720 kilometers on a single charge, powered by a high-efficiency system that delivers a maximum motor output of 150 kilowatts. These improvements, Hyundai says, make it a more practical option for consumers seeking eco-friendly mobility solutions.
To further highlight the model, Hyundai recently deployed 32 Nexo SUVs as protocol vehicles during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Ministerial Meeting held in the southern port city of Busan. “The rising sales of the Nexo, along with its use at international events, indicate that hydrogen mobility is gradually becoming part of everyday life,” a company official remarked.
Expanding U.S. Investment
In a parallel move reflecting its global ambitions, Hyundai Motor Group announced plans to raise its U.S. investment commitment to $26 billion over the next four years, with a focus on steel, automobiles, and robotics. The figure marks a significant increase from the $21 billion pledge made earlier this year in March.
The revised investment plan was unveiled following President Lee Jae Myung’s first summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington. Hyundai stated that the expanded investment will help the company align with U.S. government policies while opening up new business opportunities in emerging sectors.
As part of the initiative, Hyundai will construct a steel plant in Louisiana with an annual production capacity of 2.7 million tons. The facility is expected to supply high-quality, low-carbon steel to key strategic industries, reinforcing Hyundai’s commitment to sustainability and competitiveness.
With strong demand for its hydrogen SUV at home and a multi-billion-dollar expansion plan abroad, Hyundai Motor is positioning itself at the forefront of the global transition to cleaner mobility and advanced manufacturing.
