Nepal Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak Resigns After Deadly Gen Z Protests
Kathmandu, Sept 2025 : Nepal’s Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned on Monday evening, taking moral responsibility for the deaths and injuries during the Gen Z protests that swept across the country.
Lekhak submitted his resignation to Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli during a Cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar. According to ministers present, Lekhak stepped down following the deaths of 17 people in Kathmandu and two in Itahari, while more than 400 others were injured after police clashed with demonstrators.
The protests, led largely by young people, began as a movement demanding government accountability, anti-corruption measures, and greater economic opportunities. On Monday, demonstrations in Kathmandu escalated as protesters attempted to storm parliament, prompting police to fire rubber bullets and tear gas.
Earlier in the day, Nepali Congress leaders Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma had demanded Lekhak’s resignation on moral grounds. Although Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba remained silent, Lekhak informed party colleagues of his decision before heading to the Cabinet meeting.
Lekhak had taken charge as Home Minister on July 15, 2024. His resignation marks the first major political fallout from the escalating Gen Z protests, which continue to spread across Nepal’s cities.
