Tamil Nadu Marks First Police Day; CM Stalin Hails Role of Police in State’s Security
Chennai, Sept 2025: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday presided over the state’s first Police Day celebrations at Rajarathinam Stadium in Egmore, marking a historic occasion for the police force. The Chief Minister administered the oath to officers and later distributed prizes to the children of policemen who had excelled in various competitions organised by the Greater Chennai Police.
As announced earlier, Tamil Nadu officially observed its first Police Day on September 6, 2025. The date was chosen to commemorate the enactment of Act 24 of the Madras District Police Act, 1859, which came into effect on September 6, 1859, and laid the foundation for modern policing in the state.

To mark the occasion, events were organised across districts and cities, including oath-taking ceremonies at police stations, tributes to martyrs, community outreach programmes, and cultural activities involving police families and the public.
Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for dedicating a day to recognise the police force. “From New Year to all major festivals, the police tirelessly serve the public. It is fitting that we now have a day to honour them,” he said. He also reaffirmed the force’s commitment to realise the Chief Minister’s vision of a “crime-free Tamil Nadu.”
Addressing the gathering, Director General of Police G. Venkataraman highlighted the Chief Minister’s personal involvement. He recalled how Mr. Stalin, while on a visit to Europe, had enquired about preparations for Police Day and returned to participate in the celebrations as promised.
“There are days to honour mothers, doctors, nurses, and even a Transgender Day in Tamil Nadu. Yet, until now, there was no special day for policemen who work tirelessly around the clock,” said DGP Venkataraman
