Thailand’s Ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra Begins Prison Term After Court Ruling
Sept 2025 : Thailand’s influential former prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, began his first full day in prison on Wednesday after the Supreme Court ruled that he had improperly served his sentence in a hospital rather than in jail. The decision marks one of the most significant setbacks for the Shinawatra political dynasty, which has dominated and divided Thai politics for over two decades.
Thaksin, 76, was transferred to Bangkok Remand Prison following the ruling and later moved to Klong Prem prison, where he is expected to serve the remainder of his one-year sentence. The Department of Corrections confirmed the transfer but offered no further updates on his status.
The Shinawatra family has long been viewed as the main challenger to Thailand’s pro-military, pro-monarchy establishment. Their populist appeal among rural and working-class Thais has been countered by repeated interventions from the military and judiciary, which see the movement as a threat to the country’s traditional power structure.
The dynasty’s influence has recently waned, particularly after a series of legal and political blows. The most recent came with the ousting of Thaksin’s daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, from the prime minister’s office just last month.
Thaksin was first elected prime minister in 2001 and re-elected in 2005, but his second term was cut short by a military coup. He fled into self-imposed exile and returned only in August 2023. Upon his return, he faced an eight-year sentence for corruption and abuse of power, which was later reduced to one year by a royal pardon.
Despite the prison term, Thaksin initially avoided spending any time behind bars, being swiftly admitted to a private hospital instead. His medical transfer, coinciding with his Pheu Thai Party forming a new government, fueled speculation of a secret deal and allegations of preferential treatment.
The Supreme Court ruling dismissed claims of a medical emergency, stating that his hospital stay was unlawful. With the decision, Thaksin’s long-running ability to evade prison time appears to have come to an end, further underscoring the decline of one of Thailand’s most powerful political dynasties.
