Kondagaon District Hospital Creates History
First Successful Kidney Operation through Laparoscopic Method – A New Life for a Woman Struggling with Financial Hardship
Raipur, Sept 2025 : Kondagaon district continues to set new benchmarks in the field of healthcare. September 4, 2025, marked a historic day for the district when doctors at Kondagaon District Hospital successfully performed a kidney operation using the laparoscopic method for the first time. This achievement is not only a milestone in the medical field but also a blessing for a woman battling poverty and illness.

A Woman’s Struggle and Hope
Savitri Korram, 35, from Bazarpara, Kondagaon, has lived a life full of hardships. After her husband’s death a few years ago, the entire responsibility of raising two sons and two daughters fell on her shoulders. To run her household, Savitri started working in other people’s homes, cleaning and washing utensils.
Two years ago, she began experiencing frequent urination problems. With her meager savings, she went to Visakhapatnam, where tests revealed severe kidney disease. Doctors advised immediate surgery, but the high cost shattered her hopes, forcing her to return home with incomplete treatment. Burdened with her children’s upbringing and household responsibilities, Savitri felt her life was slowly slipping away.
Kondagaon District Hospital Becomes a Lifeline
In despair, Savitri turned to Kondagaon District Hospital. After examination, surgeon Dr. S. Nagulan and his team confirmed that one of her kidneys was completely damaged and needed removal. A conventional operation would require a large incision and carry high infection risks, which was too dangerous for her. Dr. Nagulan then made the bold decision to conduct the surgery laparoscopically.
According to hospital officials, the surgery was performed on September 4. Alongside Dr. Nagulan, the team included Dr. Shailesh Kumar, Dr. Anil Dewangan, and Dr. Krishna Markam. OT Head Nurse Swapnapriya, staff nurses Pushpalata Kunwar, Hemant Mandavi, Sanjana Jain, Rameshwari, Archana, Sadhana, and Reena also played crucial roles. The surgery lasted around three hours, during which Savitri’s damaged kidney was successfully removed. The operation was a complete success, and Savitri is now recovering well.
Expressing her gratitude, Savitri said:
“At first, I thought poverty and illness had ended my life. But Kondagaon District Hospital and the Ayushman Card have given me a new lease of life.”
Vision, Planning, and Teamwork
This success is also the result of the district administration and health department’s planned efforts. Collector Mrs. Nupur Rashi Panna has placed special emphasis on strengthening healthcare facilities in the district. The operation was made possible under the guidance of Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. R.K. Chaturvedi and Civil Surgeon Dr. Prem Mandavi.
This achievement proves that under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Dev Sai, healthcare services in Chhattisgarh are steadily improving. The state government envisions a future where patients will no longer need to rely on big cities for treatment. Previously, people from the Bastar region had to travel to Visakhapatnam, Raipur, or other major cities for serious illnesses, but now modern facilities are being made available at the district level itself.
The laparoscopic kidney operation at Kondagaon District Hospital is a milestone in this direction.
