Drones Disrupt Air Traffic in Denmark, Prompting Airport Closures
Sept 2025 : Drones were sighted over four airports in Denmark, leading to the temporary closure of Aalborg Airport for several hours, according to police reports on Thursday. This incident follows a similar occurrence earlier in the week that resulted in the closure of Copenhagen Airport.
The drones were observed at the airports in Aalborg, Esbjerg, Sonderborg, and the Skrydstrup airbase, ultimately dispersing on their own. Aalborg Airport, located in northern Denmark and one of the largest airports in the country after Copenhagen, was shut down for safety reasons before reopening several hours later.
North Jutland Chief Police Inspector Jesper Bojgaard Madsen commented on the situation, noting, “It was not possible to bring down the drones, which flew over a very large area over a couple of hours. At this time, we have not apprehended the drone operators either.”
South Jutland police reported receiving multiple reports of drone activity at Esbjerg, Sonderborg, and Skrydstrup airports late Wednesday evening. While Esbjerg and Sonderborg airports remained open, no flights were scheduled there until Thursday morning. Officials indicated that the drones flew with lights and were spotted by people on the ground, but specifics regarding the type of drones and their motives remain unclear.
Authorities are conducting a broad investigation in collaboration with the Danish intelligence service, PET, and the Armed Forces to determine the circumstances surrounding these incidents. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the drone events as “the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure” after the initial disruption at Copenhagen Airport. Police are urging the public to report any sightings of drones to aid in the investigation and ensure safety at the airports.
