Lunglei, Sept 2025: In line with the nationwide cleanliness campaign ‘Swachhata Hi Seva 2025’, the ‘Garbage Free City Lunglei Project 2025’ initiated by the Lunglei Municipal Council (LMC), and the ongoing ‘Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2025’, a ‘Mass Sanitation Drive’ was organised today across Lunglei town.

As part of the drive, various public places, government offices, schools and anganwadi centres were cleaned, with community members pledging to actively participate in the cleanliness movement. The event coincided with the national call of ‘Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath: Nationwide Voluntary Shramdaan’, observed across the country under Swachhata Hi Seva, and also marked a key initiative day under the Garbage Free City Lunglei Project. Awareness programmes on the importance of waste segregation, nutrition and the reduction of single-use plastics under Rashtriya Poshan Maah were also integrated with the event.

The programme was flagged off at 10:30 a.m. from the Old Tennis Court, Venglai, where LMC Chairman Pu Lalzuithanga addressed participants. He urged citizens to take ownership of keeping their surroundings clean and to contribute actively to the ongoing Garbage Free City initiative.

LMC Ward No. VI Councillor Pu R. Lalremsiama chaired the flag-off function. Lunglei Additional Deputy Commissioner Pi Zoramdini, Lunglei Sub-Headquarters YMA President Pu K. Lalfakzuala and Lunglei Sub-Headquarters MHIP President Dr H. Lalnunmawii also addressed the gathering and called upon all to contribute towards cleanliness. Participants also took a ‘Cleanliness Pledge’.

The drive witnessed wide participation from LMC councillors and officials, sanitation workers, Women & Child Development staff, members of YMA and MHIP, as well as youth and student bodies including NSS, Rovers & Rangers, and Scouts & Guides from various schools and colleges such as Lunglei Government College, Govt J. Buana College, HATIM, Govt HSS Lunglei, Sacred Heart School and Southern Flower School. Local NGOs like Clean Lunglei and Project Save Tlawng also joined in.

Meanwhile, under ‘Swachhata Hi Seva 2025’, which is being observed from 17 September to 2 October 2025, the UD&PA Department has already identified and cleaned five priority locations (Cleanliness Target Units) in Lunglei. Health check-ups for LMC sanitation workers were also carried out at the Health ATM, Civil Hospital Lunglei. Parallel cleanliness drives were conducted at schools, anganwadi centres and across various localities in the district.
