Rahul Gandhi Embarks on South American Tour to Engage Leaders, Students, and Business Community

New Delhi, Sept 2025 : Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has commenced a South American tour during which he will engage with political leaders, university students, and business representatives across four countries.

The Congress party’s media and publicity in-charge, Pawan Khera, confirmed the development on Saturday but did not disclose the names of all the countries Gandhi will visit. In a post on X, Khera wrote, “Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Shri Rahul Gandhi, has embarked on a visit to South America. He is scheduled to engage with political leaders, university students, and members of the business community across four countries.”

According to Congress sources, this marks LoP Gandhi’s first overseas visit in September. The trip aims to strengthen democratic, trade, and strategic ties with the region, building on historical India–South America cooperation and broader Global South solidarity.

During his visit to Brazil and Colombia, Gandhi is expected to meet university students and senior political leaders, including presidents and cabinet officials, to discuss shared democratic values and strategic collaboration. The Congress party said he will also interact with business leaders to explore trade opportunities as India seeks to diversify economic partnerships amid global trade uncertainties, including recent US tariffs.

This tour follows Gandhi’s earlier trip to Malaysia earlier this month, which did not receive an official announcement from Congress. The unpublicized visit had drawn criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya shared a photograph of Gandhi in Malaysia, claiming that the Congress leader was vacationing rather than on official business.

On X, Malviya posted, “Rahul Gandhi has slipped away yet again—this time on a clandestine vacation in Langkawi, Malaysia. Looks like the heat and dust of Bihar’s politics was too much for the Congress ‘Yuvraj’, who had to rush off for a break. Or is it another one of those secret meetings that no one is supposed to know about?”

Congress sources, however, have reiterated that Gandhi’s visits are part of efforts to deepen diplomatic, educational, and economic exchanges, projecting India’s engagement with the Global South and exploring opportunities for collaboration with South American nations.

The South American tour is expected to continue over the coming days, with Gandhi participating in a series of dialogues and discussions designed to foster international cooperation and strengthen India’s presence in the region.
