Iran Claims to Have Shot Down US Drone Amid Continuing Regional Tensions

Tehran, May 2026 : Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Sunday claimed that it had shot down a US military drone after it allegedly entered Iranian territorial waters, marking another escalation in tensions between Tehran and Washington despite an ongoing ceasefire arrangement.

According to Iran’s state-run news agency IRNA, the downed aircraft was identified as a US MQ-1 drone. The IRGC said the drone had entered Iranian territory with the intention of carrying out hostile operations and was swiftly detected by the country’s air defence systems before being destroyed by missile fire.

The latest claim comes just days after the IRGC asserted that it had shot down a US MQ-9 drone and reserved what it described as its “legitimate and definite” right to respond to any violations of the ceasefire by the United States. Iranian media reports also indicated that the Guard Corps had engaged a fighter aircraft allegedly entering Iranian airspace.

The developments follow a series of recent military actions by the United States in and around the Persian Gulf region. Earlier this week, the US military confirmed carrying out what it described as “self-defence strikes” against Iranian targets in southern Iran.

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operations targeted missile launch sites and boats that were allegedly attempting to deploy naval mines. US officials said the strikes were intended to protect American personnel and commercial shipping routes from potential threats.

CENTCOM spokesperson Tim Hawkins stated that US forces acted to defend troops in the region while continuing to exercise restraint during the ceasefire period. He maintained that the operations were defensive in nature and aimed at ensuring maritime security.

The United States also reportedly conducted overnight strikes on Thursday against a military installation in Iran that Washington said posed a threat to both US forces and international commercial vessels operating in the region. Despite these actions, US officials have maintained that the ceasefire between the two countries remains in effect.

Meanwhile, Iranian media reported that three explosions were heard near the strategic port city of Bandar Abbas, located along the Strait of Hormuz, during the early hours of Thursday morning. The cause of the explosions was not immediately confirmed.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, carrying a significant portion of global oil and gas exports. Any military activity in the region is closely monitored by international markets and governments.

The broader conflict continues to be influenced by disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme. Washington has repeatedly argued that Tehran’s nuclear activities pose a security threat and has expressed concerns that Iran could seek to develop nuclear weapons, an allegation that Iran has consistently denied.

As both sides exchange accusations and military actions continue, concerns remain over the potential for further escalation in an already volatile region.
