TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee Injured During Protest at Chanditala Police Station, BJP Rejects Allegations

Kolkata, May 2026 : Tension escalated in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Sunday after Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee sustained a head injury during a protest outside the Chanditala police station while leading a demonstration against the arrest and detention of party workers.

The incident occurred when Banerjee, accompanied by several TMC supporters, arrived at the police station to submit a memorandum and stage a sit-in protest. According to the Trinamool leader, he was struck by a stone allegedly thrown from a distance amid the commotion. Visuals from the scene showed Banerjee falling to the ground after suffering the injury.

Soon after the incident, the TMC MP accused workers of the BJP of carrying out the attack. He alleged that the stone-pelting was part of a deliberate attempt to intimidate opposition voices and blamed the saffron party for creating a hostile political environment in the state.

The BJP, however, strongly denied the allegations. Party leaders claimed that Banerjee was facing the anger of local residents who, according to them, have suffered due to the alleged actions of Trinamool workers over the years. The BJP maintained that it had no role in the incident and dismissed the accusations as politically motivated.

Speaking to supporters after receiving medical attention, Kalyan Banerjee launched a sharp attack on the BJP and senior opposition leaders. He alleged that attempts were being made to suppress Trinamool workers through intimidation and violence. He appealed to the people of West Bengal to remain vigilant and resist what he described as efforts to undermine democratic rights.

The MP also targeted the local police administration, claiming that law enforcement personnel had failed to ensure his safety during the protest. He further alleged that the officer in charge of the police station was responsible for mishandling the situation and accused the police of acting in a partisan manner.

Addressing party workers and supporters, Banerjee urged citizens across the state to continue protesting against what he termed a deteriorating law-and-order situation. He claimed that democratic freedoms were under threat and called on people to raise their voices against intimidation and political violence.

The incident comes just a day after another high-profile confrontation involving the Trinamool Congress. On Saturday, TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee faced protests and hostility during a visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district.

Abhishek Banerjee had travelled to the area to meet the family of a Trinamool worker who allegedly died in post-poll violence. However, his visit was met with strong public protests. According to reports, demonstrators hurled shoes, eggs and stones while shouting slogans against the TMC leader. Some protesters also chanted “Chor Chor” (thief), forcing Banerjee to take protective measures.

As the situation worsened, the TMC leader reportedly wore a helmet to shield himself from possible injuries. Despite the precautions, his clothes were allegedly torn during the scuffle. Security personnel, including state police and central forces, later intervened to bring the situation under control and ensure his safe movement in the area.

Following the incident, Abhishek Banerjee accused the BJP of orchestrating a planned attack to disrupt his visit and create unrest. The BJP, however, rejected the charge, maintaining that the protests reflected genuine public resentment.

The back-to-back confrontations involving two senior Trinamool leaders have intensified political tensions in West Bengal, with both the ruling party and the opposition trading accusations over violence, intimidation and public disorder. As the war of words continues, the incidents have once again highlighted the deep political polarisation that continues to dominate the state’s political landscape.
