Mumbai’s Film City to Undergo a Complete Transformation in the Next Four Years – Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis
At ‘FICCI Frames – A Silver Jubilee of Vision,’ CM assures a major revamp; urges film industry to join the fight against cybercrime through ‘Digital Warfare’
Says Marathi theatre and cinema are rich in content and quality – the golden days of Marathi films are back
Mumbai, Oct 2025 : Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that Mumbai—the entertainment capital of India—will see a complete transformation of its Film City within the next four years. He said that the redevelopment will include modern facilities for every stage of film production, from creation to exhibition, underlining the government’s commitment to strengthen the film industry’s ecosystem.
Speaking at “FICCI Frames – A Silver Jubilee of Vision”, where actor Akshay Kumar interviewed him, the Chief Minister responded to questions on the development of the Marathi and Hindi film industries and plans for Mumbai’s Film City.
Film City to Become an Iconic Hub for the Film Industry
Fadnavis emphasized that Mumbai holds a vital place in India’s film production landscape, with a well-established ecosystem for filmmaking. From shooting to editing and post-production, Mumbai and its neighboring areas—such as Karjat and Mira-Bhayander—have become major filming hubs. The CM stated that while the film industry is currently spread across various locations, efforts are underway to consolidate and modernize it through Film City, giving it an iconic, world-class identity.
He said that the government aims to provide state-of-the-art infrastructure and integrated facilities for all stakeholders in the film sector, making Film City a landmark destination for Indian cinema.
Marathi Theatre and Cinema Gaining Strength through Quality Content
Fadnavis praised the creativity, experimentation, and strong storytelling of Marathi cinema and theatre, noting that they continue to win audiences’ hearts. “The days when Marathi films struggled for screens are behind us. Today, two Marathi films can release simultaneously and still run houseful,” he said, citing films like Natarang, Sakharam Binder, and the recent Dashavatar as examples of Marathi cinema’s success.
He recalled that Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian cinema, laid the foundation of the country’s film industry in Mumbai. Since then, countless Hindi and Marathi films have deeply moved audiences with their emotional narratives and have inspired ordinary people through their stories. Fadnavis urged filmmakers to create films that resonate with the current generation (Gen Z), ensuring that young audiences remain connected to Indian cinema.
Call for the Film Industry to Join “Digital Warfare” Against Cybercrime
Highlighting the growing challenges of cybercrime, sextortion, and online fraud in the digital era, the Chief Minister said the government is introducing technological and structural reforms to curb such offences. He appealed to the film industry to use cinema as a powerful social medium to spread awareness and support this cause.
“Filmmakers should create movies and stories centered on cybercrime and digital safety,” he said. “Through these films, public awareness will increase, and our collective fight against cybercrime will gain strength.” He urged the film industry to actively participate in the ‘Digital Warfare’ initiative to combat cyber threats.
Mumbai’s Infrastructure Upgrades to Reduce Travel Time
During the interaction, Fadnavis also addressed questions about Mumbai’s infrastructure projects—including road development, police modernization, underground tunnels, and metro expansion. He said that once the ongoing projects are completed, commuters will be able to travel from one end of Mumbai to the other in just 59 minutes, saving citizens significant travel time and improving overall urban mobility.
The event was attended by Anant Goenka (FICCI), Sandhya Devanathan (Meta), Ashish Kulkarni, Arjun Lohar, and Dipendra Singh Kushwah, along with prominent personalities from the film, broadcast, and social media sectors.
