Cabinet Minister PC Vanlalruata Urges Students to Strengthen Co-operative Movement at MSU General Conference

Hnahthial, Oct 2025: During the 23rd General Conference of the Mizo Students’ Union (MSU) Palai Lawm programme, Cabinet Minister Pu PC Vanlalruata emphasized the importance of engaging in the co-operative movement to strengthen economic and community development. He encouraged students to actively participate in co-operative initiatives for the welfare of the state.

Minister Vanlalruata also highlighted the need for students to apply the knowledge and skills gained during their studies for the betterment of Mizoram. He noted that the Mizoram State University plans to ensure students can practically use their learning after two years of study.

Khual Zahawm MLA Pu Jeje Lalpekhlua added that students should not only focus on academic excellence but also learn practical skills, including writing and documentation, to prepare themselves for real-life responsibilities.

Minister Vanlalruata pointed out that students should take advantage of various training opportunities provided by the government, including those in co-operatives, railways, and other sectors, to enhance their employability. According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey, August 2025, India’s overall unemployment rate stands at 5.1%, while Mizoram’s is comparatively lower at 2.2% (as per NITI Aayog, September 2025). He urged students to use available resources and training to prepare for a competitive and productive future.

He emphasized that participation in the co-operative movement and acquiring practical skills will help students contribute to the development of Mizoram and achieve self-reliance. He also highlighted the historical role of the excise department, citing that in 1984, about 1,895 people were caught in illegal liquor-related activities, emphasizing the importance of awareness and responsibility among youth.

Students were advised to develop discipline, responsibility, and leadership qualities while balancing academic and practical learning. The minister stressed that education should go beyond theory, enabling students to actively participate in social and economic progress.

The 23rd MSU General Conference and the Palai Lawm programme were organized by Pu Lalruatpuia, Assistant General Secretary, MSU, and the conference is scheduled to continue on October 10, 2025. The programme aims to equip students with both academic and practical skills, preparing them for leadership roles in the state.
