RTI Week Observed in Serchhip

Serchhip Oct, 2025 : The inaugural function of the Right to Information (RTI) Week 2025 was held at the DC’s Conference Hall, Serchhip, with Deputy Commissioner Pu Paul L. Khuma presiding over the programme.

Pu Paul L. Khuma spoke on the background and significance of the Right to Information Act, tracing its roots from the Official Secrets Act of 1923 enacted during British rule. He highlighted how, even after India’s independence, government transparency remained limited for many years until the RTI Act was introduced to ensure openness and accountability in governance. The DC emphasized that the Act empowers both citizens and government employees to function with honesty and responsibility, fostering trust between the administration and the public. He further stated that observing RTI Week aims to create awareness among citizens and officials about the importance and benefits of the Act, helping people understand how to effectively use their right to information.

The RTI Act was passed by the Indian Parliament on June 15, 2005, and came into force across the country (except Jammu & Kashmir at the time) on October 12, 2005.

Dr. C. Vanlalchhanhimi and Dr. Marilyn Lalruatkimi, both Master Trainers, served as Resource Persons for today’s inaugural programme. They gave detailed presentations on the provisions of the RTI Act, the process of filing RTI applications, and the roles and responsibilities of SPIOs and SAPIOs. They also discussed the importance of timely responses and transparency in handling public information requests, emphasizing that awareness of RTI rights helps promote a more accountable government.

After the training session, an interaction and question-answer segment was held, allowing participants to clarify doubts and share experiences. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Pi Lalnunmawii, District Information and Public Relations Officer.
