AAP Takes to the Streets Demanding Justice for Dalit IPS Officer Puran Kumar’s Family
Chandigarh, Oct 2025 : The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has intensified its campaign to secure justice for Dalit IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, transforming it into a mass movement across Punjab. The family’s continued struggle for justice and the silence of the BJP-led Haryana government have sparked widespread public outrage. AAP has made it clear that this issue is not merely about the death of one officer, but about the larger fight for justice, equality, and social dignity.
Senior IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, who hailed from a Dalit community, died by suicide, and since then his family has been demanding justice. The delay in the post-mortem and funeral has become symbolic of how the system attempted to suppress the death of a Dalit officer under political and bureaucratic pressure. However, AAP announced that this demand for justice will now echo through the streets of Punjab under its leadership.
In all major districts of the state, AAP ministers and MLAs will lead candlelight marches.
- In Amritsar, Harbhajan Singh ETO will lead the march,
- In Jalandhar, Mohinder Bhagat,
- In Patiala, MLA Gurdev Devmann, and
- In Chandigarh, senior party leaders will take the lead.
The party stated that this will not be a mere symbolic gesture but a strong message — that when those in power remain silent in the face of injustice, the people take to the streets to demand answers.
AAP has also linked this movement to the ideology of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, emphasizing that it represents the same struggle for justice, equality, and dignity that Baba Saheb devoted his life to. The people of Punjab, the party said, will not tolerate the injustice done to an honest officer like Puran Kumar. This movement, AAP declared, is not just for one officer but for the dignity of the entire Dalit community.
Public anger is clearly visible. People are outraged and hurt, asking a pressing question — “If a senior IPS officer cannot get justice, what hope is there for an ordinary citizen?” The silence and inaction of the BJP government have only deepened this resentment. AAP said that the government must now answer the people, because the demand for justice can no longer be suppressed.
The party further alleged that the BJP government’s insensitivity is proof that the pain and concerns of the Dalit community are not taken seriously in the corridors of power. However, history shows, AAP noted, that whenever those in power tried to silence people’s voices, public movements on the streets compelled justice. That is why, across Punjab, thousands of candles will be lit, and people will raise their voices together for justice.
AAP stated that this movement will go beyond politics, emerging as a symbol of social awakening. The party emphasized that the fight for justice may be long and difficult, but it will continue until Puran Kumar’s family receives justice.
