Chief Minister Attends Silver Jubilee Celebration of Serchhip MJA
Serchhip, Oct 2025 :The Serchhip District Mizoram Journalists’ Association (MJA) celebrated its Silver Jubilee, marking 25 years since its founding, with Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma attending as the chief guest. The celebration was held at Kawnpui VC Hall, with Home Minister Pu K. Sapdanga also gracing the event as a guest of honour.
In his address, the Chief Minister emphasized the significance of freedom of speech and expression as guaranteed under India’s Fundamental Rights, highlighting that the Supreme Court of India has interpreted this right to include the freedom of the press. He called journalism the “Fourth Pillar of Democracy”, essential for safeguarding democratic values.
He noted that just as the government uses communication tools to reach citizens, individuals, communities, religious groups, and political parties also use their voices to express opinions through speech and writing. He underlined that everyone has equal access to these freedoms, which are vital to national harmony and good governance.
The Chief Minister acknowledged the vital role of journalists, saying their contributions have strengthened society and governance. He mentioned the government’s various initiatives to support journalists, including the establishment of a dedicated Department for Media Affairs, press accreditation, advertisement rate revisions, press tours, death benefits, and the implementation of a Journalist Pension Scheme.
He urged accredited journalists to report responsibly, especially in the current digital era, where social media has amplified communication but also increased the spread of misinformation. He cautioned against misleading news, defamation, and irresponsible commentary, emphasizing that journalists must act as truthful and credible voices for the people.
The Chief Minister further said that responsible use of new media technologies and collaboration with mainstream news outlets would strengthen public communication and transparency. He expressed gratitude for journalists’ commitment and encouraged them to continue their dedicated work for the welfare of the state and its people.
Home Minister Pu K. Sapdanga also addressed the gathering, unveiling the Silver Jubilee Souvenir and delivering a keynote speech. He emphasized the importance of advancing journalism with integrity and professionalism, urging journalists to continue their journey toward the Golden Jubilee with dedication and unity.
The event also reflected on the history of journalism in Serchhip. The district’s first newspaper, Lenkawl, was founded in 1981 by Pu Remmawia Kawlni. Later, in 1993, Ramlai Arsi began publication, followed by others until the establishment of the Serchhip District Journalists’ Association in 2000. The district association formally joined the Mizoram Journalists’ Association (MJA) in 2006.
The program was chaired by MJA Serchhip Vice President Pu Kapliana Pachuau, with President Pu C. Lalhminghlua and MJA General Headquarters representatives also addressing the gathering. A moment of remembrance was observed for deceased members.
At present, the Serchhip District MJA has 14 active members.
