CIFRI Unveils Eco-Friendly Fish Transport Tech at Guwahati Workshop.

The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) took a significant stride in empowering fish farming communities across Northeast India by organising a pivotal workshop at its Guwahati Centre. The event focused on promoting farmer-friendly technologies embedded with eco-friendly organic products to revolutionise fish transportation from hatchery sites to farmers’ water bodies.

Inaugurated by Dr. B. K. Das, Director of ICAR-CIFRI, the workshop spotlighted the Institute’s cutting-edge R&D innovations aimed at reducing the drudgery of fish transportation and combating argulus — a notorious ectoparasite that poses a major threat to the fisheries and aquaculture sector. Dr. Das have emphasised the role of Team CIFRI in developing sustainable solutions and introduced the Institute’s flagship product, ‘CIFRI Fish Tanavhari’, designed to alleviate stress during fish transport.

The workshop was decorated with participation from a distinguished panel including Dr. P. C. Bhuian, Dean, College of Fisheries, Raha; Dr. R. C. Barman, Joint Director, Department of Fisheries, Assam; Dr. Kanchan Saikia, Incharge, ICAR-IARI, Hazo; and Dr. Ashim Borah, Incharge, NE Centre of NFDB. Officials from the Department of Fisheries, Assam, along with progressive fish farmers and hatchery owners from across the state, also attended.

Dr. A. K. Beraand, and his team conducted a live demonstration of the stress-free fish transportation system, showcasing its effectiveness in reducing mortality rates of live fish seed and grow-out fish during transit. The hands-on session provided valuable insights into the practical application of CIFRI’s innovations, reinforcing the Institute’s commitment to safeguard the economic interests of fish farmers.

The workshop underscored the importance of collaborative stakeholder engagement and technology transfer in sustaining the livelihoods of fishers and hatchery owners. ICAR-CIFRI’s proactive approach continues to play a vital role in enhancing inland fisheries and aquaculture practices across India.

This initiative marks a promising chapter in the journey toward resilient and eco-conscious fish farming, with ICAR-CIFRI at the helm of transformative change.
