Relief for Karur Tragedy: TVK Transfers ₹20 Lakh to 39 Families.

Chennai, Oct 2025 : Nearly three weeks after the tragic stampede in Karur that claimed 41 lives, the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has credited ₹20 lakh each to the bank accounts of 39 bereaved families, as part of the relief announced following the incident.

The stampede occurred on September 27 during a TVK event in Karur, where Vijay was addressing a large gathering. Amidst the heavy crowd and ensuing chaos, 41 people—including children—lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries. The incident shocked the nation and drew sharp criticism over the organisers’ crowd management measures.

Following the tragedy, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced a state compensation of ₹10 lakh each for the deceased families and ₹1 lakh for those injured. Separately, TVK pledged ₹20 lakh to each family of the deceased and ₹2 lakh to each injured person. Party sources confirmed on Saturday that 39 families have now received the relief amount via online transfers.

However, two families—those of Prithika and Chandra—have yet to receive the assistance due to incomplete documentation, according to party insiders. TVK has assured that these pending payments will be processed shortly, ensuring all victims’ families receive the promised support.

The decision to transfer funds before Vijay’s personal visit was aimed at providing immediate financial relief to affected families. Reports indicate that Vijay plans to meet the families in Karur after the Deepavali festival, offering them personal condolences.

In a gesture of respect, TVK leadership has advised cadres to refrain from holding Deepavali celebrations in the party’s name. In a circular issued by TVK General Secretary N. Anand, local units were instructed to avoid public festivities or party-branded events during the festive week.

The Karur tragedy continues to cast a shadow over TVK’s public outreach initiatives. While the party has described the stampede as an “unfortunate accident,” questions regarding event safety, crowd control, and accountability remain subjects of ongoing debate within political and administrative circles.

The relief disbursement and upcoming visit are seen as part of TVK’s efforts to provide tangible support and reassurance to the affected families, even as scrutiny over organisational responsibility persists.
