Demolition Begins on White House East Wing for Trump’s $250 Million Ballroom Project
Washington, Oct 2025 : Demolition crews began tearing down part of the White House’s historic East Wing on Monday to make way for President Donald Trump’s new ballroom, a project he previously said would not alter the existing landmark structure.

Heavy construction equipment was seen dismantling sections of the East Wing façade — an area that has long housed the First Lady’s offices, a theater, and the visitor entrance that receives foreign dignitaries. The new addition, Trump has said, will be “the finest ballroom in the country,” with sweeping views of the Washington Monument and space for up to 999 guests.
The project, which Trump announced in July, is estimated to cost more than $250 million. According to the President, the construction will be funded by himself and private donors, with no taxpayer money involved.
“It will be beautiful,” Trump said at the time. “It won’t interfere with the current building. It’ll be near it, but not touching it — showing total respect for the existing structure, which I’m the biggest fan of.”
The White House declined to comment on Monday when asked about the ongoing demolition work. However, Trump confirmed the project’s commencement shortly after photos of the construction appeared in media reports.
Speaking to members of Louisiana State University’s championship baseball team during a White House visit, Trump said: “Right behind us, we’re building a ballroom. I didn’t know I’d be standing here right now, because right on the other side there’s a lot of construction going on — which you might hear periodically.”
According to Trump, future social events and state gatherings will begin with cocktails in the East Room, followed by receptions in the new ballroom, which he promises will be a world-class venue for diplomatic and cultural functions.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump added that the East Wing is being completely modernized as part of the expansion. “Completely separate from the White House itself, the East Wing is being fully updated and will be more beautiful than ever when it is complete!” he wrote.
Before entering politics, Trump was a real estate developer, and his influence is visible throughout his presidency. He has overseen several cosmetic changes to the White House, including gold accents in the Oval Office and a Rose Garden redesign reminiscent of his private resorts. He has also expressed a broader architectural interest in the nation’s capital — including a proposed Arc de Triomphe-style monument to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
The East Wing, first constructed in 1942 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was built above a bunker system designed for emergency presidential use during World War II. Over the decades, the complex has expanded its functions, but space limitations have long been a challenge for accommodating large gatherings.
White House state dinners and public events are often held under temporary tents on the South Lawn, a logistical workaround that Trump says the ballroom will finally render unnecessary.
Once completed, the new ballroom is expected to become a symbol of the Trump era’s architectural imprint on the White House — blending luxury, grandeur, and functionality in one of America’s most recognizable residences.
