Depalpur’s Historic Surajkund Stepwell Restored to Its Ancient Glory
Under the state government’s ‘Jal Ganga Samwardhan Abhiyan’, the Urban Development and Housing Department has launched a public participation initiative aimed at preserving and restoring water structures across all urban bodies in the state. The results of this effort have been encouraging, with citizens, especially the youth, taking a pledge to protect local water resources.
Surajkund Stepwell of Depalpur
Located within the Mangleshwar Mahadev Temple complex in Depalpur, Indore district, the historic Surajkund Stepwell has once again regained its ancient splendor. The stepwell is considered of great historical and religious significance. According to local belief, it was constructed during the reign of the Parmar dynasty in the 11th century. Later, Lokmata Devi Ahilyabai Holkar undertook its renovation, turning it into a vital source of clean water for the town’s residents. Over time, however, lack of upkeep led to its deterioration, its steps and pathways were damaged, and the well was on the verge of drying up.
Work under AMRUT 2.0
The restoration of the historic stepwell was undertaken under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme of the Urban Development. The enthusiasm of local residents greatly contributed to the progress of the work. Today, this water structure stands as an inspiration not only for Depalpur but for the entire state. The goal of water conservation here extends beyond water management to ensuring environmental sustainability, preserving biodiversity, and strengthening the local ecosystem.
The restoration work has improved both the quality and quantity of water, rebuilt damaged steps and pathways, cleaned plastic and solid waste, added greenery and landscaping, and fostered local community participation and awareness toward water conservation. The United Nations has also emphasised the importance of restoring traditional water structures for effective water conservation.
Community Participation and Commitment
Local citizens and youth have played a vital role in preserving the Surajkund Stepwell. They have pledged never to let this historic monument fall into neglect again. “This is our heritage,” they said. “Our ancestors cherished it, and we want our future generations to take pride in it as well.”
