Messi’s India Visit Postponed: Argentina’s Kochi Match Delayed Amid FIFA Clearance and Logistical Hurdles

Oct 2025 : Football fans across India, especially in Kerala, have been left disappointed after confirmation that Lionel Messi and the Argentina national football team’s much-anticipated friendly match in Kochi has been postponed. Originally scheduled for November 17 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the game will now be held during FIFA’s next international match window, as announced by Anto Augustine, Managing Director of Reporter Broadcasting Company, the event’s principal sponsor.

Augustine, who also heads the Emaraj Group International, clarified in a social media post that the postponement was due to delays in obtaining official approval from FIFA, the world football governing body. “Considering the delay in receiving FIFA’s permission, after discussions with the Argentine Football Association (AFA), it has been decided to postpone the match from the November window. A new date will be announced shortly,” he wrote on Facebook.

The AFA had reportedly been in constant touch with the Indian organizers, but Spanish media outlet La Nacion, citing an AFA official, reported that Kerala had failed to meet several hosting requirements. “We did everything possible to make it happen in November; a delegation even travelled to India to inspect the field and hotels. But ultimately, India couldn’t meet the requirements. Unfortunately, there were repeated breaches by India, and we are now reorganizing the contract to find a new date,” the AFA official said.

The friendly, first announced by the Kerala Sports Minister, had generated enormous enthusiasm among Indian football fans. However, the build-up to the event has been mired in confusion and miscommunication. At one stage, even the Minister himself hinted that the match was cancelled, only for the AFA to later confirm in August that Argentina would indeed play in Kochi.

Recent reports from Argentina, however, indicate that the fixture will likely be rescheduled to March 2026, rather than this November. The latest development has reignited debate over the coordination between the Kerala government, private sponsors, and the AFA, with critics — particularly from the Congress Party — accusing the state government of prematurely announcing the event without a signed agreement.

The controversy highlights the challenges of organizing high-profile international sporting events in India, where bureaucratic delays and political optics often collide with procedural requirements.

For Indian football fans, the news is a major setback. The Kochi game would have marked Messi’s first appearance in India since 2011, when he captained Argentina against Venezuela at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium, a historic match that also marked his debut as national captain.

With the next potential window for the match now projected for March 2026 — a period that could coincide with Kerala’s Assembly elections — uncertainty looms over whether the rescheduled fixture will materialize.

For now, the dream of watching Messi play on Indian soil remains alive, but postponed — leaving fans hopeful that when it finally happens, it will be worth the wait.

Team Maverick.
