Shreyas Iyer moved out of ICU, stable after spleen injury during Sydney ODI; team, fans hopeful of full recovery

Sydney, Oct 2025 : Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is now in stable condition after suffering a spleen laceration during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Sources confirmed that the team management is in constant touch with him and closely monitoring his recovery.

Initially believed to be a rib cage injury, medical scans later revealed a laceration to the spleen, prompting his admission to a Sydney hospital’s ICU. Fortunately, Iyer has shown encouraging signs of recovery, and his family is expected to arrive in Australia soon to be by his side.

A spleen laceration occurs when the soft, blood-rich organ located beneath the left rib cage is torn or ruptured. Because of the spleen’s vital role in filtering blood, such injuries can cause internal bleeding and require immediate medical care.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage while fielding on October 25. “Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his condition. The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to assess his daily progress,” the board said in a statement.

The injury occurred in the 33rd over of Australia’s innings, when Iyer dived full length near deep third man to complete a brilliant tumbling catch of wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. He was immediately rushed to the hospital for evaluation and later admitted to the ICU.

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav provided an update on Iyer’s condition, assuring fans that the right-handed batter is doing better. “We spoke to him. On the first day, when we heard about his injury, I tried calling him but later learned he didn’t have his phone. I spoke to our physio Kamlesh, who told me that Shreyas is stable. We’ve been talking to him for two days now, and he’s been replying to messages. If he’s responding on the phone, it means he’s stable. The doctor is also with him, but he’ll remain under supervision for the next few days,” Suryakumar said ahead of the first T20I against Australia.

Suryakumar also shared an update on Nitish Kumar Reddy, who missed the final ODI due to a left quadriceps injury sustained during the second match in Adelaide. “He’s doing fine. Yesterday he did some running and batting in the nets. Today was an optional practice, so he took a break but stayed with the team during the meeting,” he said.

With Iyer responding positively to treatment, both the team management and fans remain optimistic about his full recovery in the coming weeks. The Indian medical staff continues to work closely with specialists in Sydney, ensuring that the batter receives the best possible care before his eventual return to action.
