Mahavir Pusam: From an Ordinary Farmer to a Progressive One

Higher yields through quality seeds and balanced fertilizer use, Income doubled under the National Mission on Edible Oils scheme

Raipur, Oct 2025 : Mahavir Pusam, once an ordinary farmer, is now emerging as a progressive cultivator. Through hard work, dedication, and the effective use of government schemes, he has not only made his farming profitable but has also become an inspiration for other farmers in his region. With departmental support and his consistent efforts, his fields have undergone a remarkable transformation.

Earlier, he used to cultivate sesame on two acres, niger on two acres, and groundnut on one acre. By focusing on quality seeds, advanced farming techniques, and the balanced use of fertilizers, he managed to reduce production costs while increasing overall income.

Higher yields through quality seeds and balanced fertilizer use

Mahavir Pusam, a resident of Vimalapur village in Ramchandrapur block of Balrampur-Ramanujganj district, has been engaged in farming for several years, cultivating oilseeds and groundnuts on nearly five acres of land. Initially, he relied only on traditional methods and the seeds he had preserved himself. However, over time, he realized that conventional practices could not ensure consistent growth and better returns year after year.

In the early years, his farming faced several challenges. He lacked access to quality seeds and relied on traditional varieties, resulting in limited production and fluctuating yields. Consequently, his income from crops such as sesame, groundnut, and niger remained low. Due to limited knowledge of modern agricultural methods, he struggled to control input costs and maintain quality production. His annual income hovered between ₹55,000 and ₹60,000.

Increased income and improved financial stability

Mahavir began consulting other farmers in his village and nearby areas to gather more information. During this period, he learned about the National Mission on Edible Oils (NMEO) implemented by the Agriculture Department. After contacting the department, he obtained detailed guidance on the scheme.

The department provided him with high-quality seeds, training in improved farming techniques, and advice on the balanced use of fertilizers. As a result, his yield and income both improved significantly — rising from around ₹55,000–₹60,000 to approximately ₹1,00,000 per season. This success not only strengthened his family’s financial condition but also made him a source of inspiration for fellow farmers.

Adopting new technologies for more profitable farming

Mahavir Pusam says he is eager to take full advantage of all government schemes and continue adopting new and scientific methods to make his farming even more profitable. He hopes to share his experience with others so that more farmers can benefit.

“Any farmer can improve his life if he has the right information about government schemes,” Mahavir says confidently. “My goal is to use modern techniques to increase productivity and guide others toward better farming practices.”
