Cyclone Montha Brings Heavy Rain and Disruption Across Telangana

Hyderabad, Oct 2025 : Heavy rain has been battering several parts of Telangana under the influence of severe cyclonic storm Montha, which made landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast near Narsapur. The downpour has caused widespread waterlogging, disrupted transport, and led to the closure of schools in many districts.

Low-lying areas in Khammam, Warangal, Mahabubabad, Suryapet and neighbouring districts were inundated as incessant rain continued through Tuesday night. Authorities declared a holiday for educational institutions in these areas as a precautionary measure.

In Nagarkurnool district, several villages were cut off after overflowing rivulets and streams submerged connecting roads. The district, which shares its border with Andhra Pradesh, has reported some of the heaviest rainfall in the state.

Rainwater entered an electricity sub-station at Pulicherla village in Nalgonda district, disrupting power supply to several villages in Peddapur mandal. In Sultanabad mandal of Peddapalli district, heavy rain damaged large quantities of paddy stored in the agriculture market yard.

According to data from the Telangana Development Planning Society, Uppununthala in Nagarkurnool district recorded the state’s highest rainfall of 20.8 cm during the past 24 hours. Amrabad, also in Nagarkurnool, received 19.7 cm, while Theldevarapally in Nalgonda district recorded 18.5 cm. Other areas, including Veltur (18.3 cm), Ainole (17.8 cm), Padra (16.28 cm), Achampet (15.9 cm) and Yerraram (15.15 cm), also experienced torrential rainfall. Nearly 30 locations across Telangana recorded over 10 cm of rain.

In Hyderabad, moderate to heavy rainfall since Tuesday night led to water stagnation on major roads, slowing morning rush-hour traffic and causing inconvenience to commuters. Outskirts and low-lying localities reported moderate showers through Wednesday morning.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers with occasional intense spells in parts of Hyderabad, accompanied by gusty winds up to 40 kmph. Mist and hazy conditions are likely during early morning and night hours.

An orange alert has been issued for Bhadradri Kothagudem, Hanamkonda, Hyderabad, Jangaon, Jogulamba Gadwal, Khammam, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Mahabubabad, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Nalgonda, Narayanpet, Rangareddy, Suryapet, Vikarabad, Wanaparthy, Warangal, and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri districts, urging residents to stay cautious as heavy rain may continue for the next 24 hours.
