Jay Shah Hails India’s Historic Women’s World Cup Triumph as a Defining Moment for Cricket
Navi Mumbai, Nov 2025 : ICC Chairman and former BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Monday praised the Indian women’s cricket team for clinching their maiden ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup title, calling the achievement a landmark moment shaped by exceptional talent, unwavering determination, and transformative reforms in Indian cricket.
In a celebratory post on X, Shah wrote: “The @BCCIWomen’s march towards its first @cricketworldcup has been nothing short of spectacular. While the grit, resolve, and skills of the Indian team have inspired the whole nation, we must acknowledge the role of key policy decisions taken by the @BCCI — increased investment, pay parity with male cricketers, overhaul of the coaching staff, and big-match temperament nurtured under the @wplt20 spotlight. Congratulations to Harmanpreet Kaur and the entire Indian squad for this historic achievement!”
India scripted history on Sunday night by defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a commanding performance at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, lifting their first-ever Women’s ODI World Cup trophy. The victory capped a tournament where India remained composed, consistent, and tactically sharp under the leadership of captain Harmanpreet Kaur and head coach Amol Muzumdar.
The final showcased stellar contributions from key players. Shafali Verma delivered an all-round performance with 87 runs and two wickets, while Deepti Sharma’s 58 runs and five-wicket haul proved crucial to India’s dominance. Amanjot Kaur’s sensational catch to dismiss South Africa’s opener Laura Wolvaardt became one of the decisive turning points of the match, reflecting India’s improved fielding standards and big-match temperament.
Shah’s message also highlighted the BCCI’s structural reforms that laid the foundation for this success. He credited initiatives such as equal match fees for women, enhanced financial investment in the women’s game, and the launch of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). The WPL, he noted, has become a vital platform providing emerging Indian cricketers exposure to high-pressure situations and world-class competition.
Calling the victory a “defining moment” in the evolution of Indian women’s cricket, Shah said the triumph signalled India’s ascent from being a promising side to achieving global dominance. He added that this World Cup win would inspire future generations and deepen the nation’s connection with women’s cricket.
With this historic feat, India has joined the elite circle of nations that have lifted the Women’s World Cup — a milestone that will resonate across the cricketing world for years to come.
