North Korea-Russia Border Bridge on the verge of completion.

The Border Bridge project, which Russian state media has said will be nearly 3 miles long when completed, including access roads, is one of the initiatives that emerged from a comprehensive agreement signed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin during Putin’s visit to Pyongyang last year.

The agreement also elevated military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang to its highest level since the Cold War, followed just months later by North Korea’s deployment of thousands of troops to join Russia in its war against Ukraine.

The first road bridge between the two countries is being built across the Tumen River along their shared border, according to satellite images analysed by the Center for Strategic and International Studies CSIS), a Washington expert agency.

On the Russian side, construction has extended roughly 360 feet into the river, with work completed on load-bearing piles designed to support bridge piers—structures that transfer the deck’s weight down to the foundation.

On the North Korean side, construction has stretched nearly 500 feet into the river. Six bridge piers have been erected on land, and excavations for two additional support piles have been completed, CSIS said. Workers have also nearly finished the approach ramp and abutment connecting the bridge deck to the ground.

The report also revealed the construction of a new port of entry complex covering around 1.9 square miles. The site includes a warehouse, customs house, vehicle maintenance facility and several support buildings, along with a surrounding parking area that the authors said would likely be used for truck transfers, with drivers swapped out at the border since they will not be permitted to cross further into the other country.

The project site is located near the only other link between the two countries, the rail only bridge known as the “Friendship Bridge“.

Expertise Opinion –

CSIS analysts Joseph S. Bermudez Junior, Victor Cha and Jennifer Jun, the trio who have authored the October 27 report, said: “The speed at which the road bridge construction is proceeding and the continued high level of rail traffic in the previously dormant classification yards between the nations are clear indications of the importance of and expansion of trade between both countries during Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine“.

Vladimir Putin, president of Russia, said during the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok in September: “Transport bridges to China have already been built in the Far East. Plans also include the construction of new bridges, including to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, over the Tumen River, which is scheduled to open next year“.

At the current pace of work and resources used, and given the severity of the coming winter, the project is expected to open in the first quarter of 2026, the report concluded.
