Kopra Reservoir to Receive Ramsar Site Status
State Wetland Authority Sends Proposal
Raipur, Nov 2025 : Acting on the directives of Forest and Climate Change Minister Kedar Kashyap, the Chhattisgarh government has taken a major step toward declaring the Kopra Reservoir, located in Bilaspur district, as a proposed Ramsar Site. Known for its natural as well as human-made features, this reservoir is considered a crucial centre for water resources, irrigation, and biodiversity in the entire region.

Kopra Reservoir to Gain National and International Recognition
Minister Kashyap expressed hope that the declaration of Kopra Reservoir as a Ramsar Site would bring national and international recognition to the area. The reservoir is primarily filled by rainwater and nearby small streams. It meets the water requirements of local villagers and is a major source of irrigation for farmers. The land surrounding the reservoir is highly fertile, making agriculture in several villages and small towns heavily dependent on it.
A Hub of Rich Biodiversity
The region serves as a safe habitat throughout the year for various species of birds, aquatic animals, and plants. A large number of migratory birds are recorded here annually. The reservoir supports abundant populations of fish, aquatic plants, amphibians, reptiles, and numerous insects, contributing to its reputation as an area of exceptionally rich biodiversity.

Ideal Habitat for Rare Bird Species
According to the State Wetland Authority, the Kopra Reservoir is an ideal site for the conservation of rare and important bird species such as the River Tern, Common Pochard, and Egyptian Vulture. Experts say the reservoir fully meets Ramsar Criteria 02, 03, and 05, making it an outstanding example of a wetland ecosystem.
Proposal Sent to the Centre; Tourism Potential to Rise
Considering its ecological importance, the state government has submitted a proposal to the Centre for declaring it a Ramsar Site. If approved, the reservoir will receive international-level protection, enhancing its scientific, environmental, and tourism-related significance.
Strengthening Rural Livelihood Development
Under government schemes, efforts are being planned to further strengthen activities related to environmental conservation, water conservation, biodiversity enhancement, and rural livelihood development in the area, aiming to maintain a balance between the local population and natural resources.
