IAF Pilot Wg Cdr Naman Syal Identified as Victim of Tejas Crash at Dubai Air Show
New Delhi, Nov 2025 : The Indian Air Force on Friday confirmed that the pilot who lost his life after a Tejas fighter jet crashed during an aerial demonstration at the Dubai Air Show was Wing Commander Naman Syal, a highly regarded officer from Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district.
The fatal accident occurred during a scheduled display at the biennial Dubai Air Show, one of the world’s premier aviation events. Despite swift emergency response at the venue, Wg Cdr Syal succumbed to his injuries.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed deep sorrow over the tragic news, calling the incident a heartbreaking loss for the state and the nation.
“The nation has lost a courageous, dutiful, and valiant pilot,” he wrote on X, offering condolences to the bereaved family. “I bow with heartfelt reverence to the indomitable bravery, dedication, and commitment to national service of Shri Naman Syal.”
Earlier in the day, the IAF confirmed the accident in an official statement, noting that the aircraft crashed during the aerial display and the pilot sustained fatal injuries.
“IAF deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief,” the statement read. A court of inquiry has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which manufactures the Tejas aircraft, also issued a condolence message. “HAL expresses its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family,” the company said, adding that it was deeply saddened by the loss of the courageous pilot.
Friday’s tragedy marks the second crash involving a Tejas aircraft, the first having occurred in 2024 near Jaisalmer, when the pilot had managed to eject safely. The Tejas is India’s indigenously developed 4.5-generation multirole fighter, central to the country’s modernisation of its air combat fleet.
The crash comes amid significant defence developments at the Dubai Air Show. On November 19, India and Germany revived high-technology military cooperation after nearly three decades, with HAL signing a landmark agreement with German state-backed sensor major HENSOLDT for the joint development of a LiDAR-based Obstacle Avoidance System for military helicopters.
As the aviation community mourns the loss of Wg Cdr Syal, tributes continue to pour in for the brave officer who died in the line of duty, representing India on a global stage.
