G20 Summit: PM Modi meets IMF Chief Kristalina Georgieva

Johannesburg, Nov 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a series of high-level bilateral and multilateral meetings on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg on Sunday, underscoring India’s commitment to global cooperation, responsible technology use, and sustainable development.

PM Modi met International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and discussed global economic issues and financial stability. “Interacted with Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, on the sidelines of the Johannesburg G20 Summit,” he noted in a post on X.

Earlier, the Prime Minister addressed the third session of the G20 Summit themed “A Fair and Just Future for All – Critical Minerals; Decent Work; Artificial Intelligence.” He called for a fundamental shift in how critical technologies are promoted, emphasizing that technology applications should be ‘human-centric’ rather than ‘finance-centric’, ‘global’ rather than ‘national’, and based on ‘open source’ principles rather than exclusive models.

Highlighting the importance of responsible AI, PM Modi stressed that artificial intelligence must serve the global good. He called for a global compact founded on transparency, human oversight, safety-by-design, and prevention of misuse. India will host the AI Impact Summit in February 2026 under the theme “Sarvajanam Hitaya, Sarvajanam Sukhaya” (Welfare for all, Happiness for all) and invited all G20 countries to participate.

On the bilateral front, PM Modi met with several world leaders to strengthen partnerships. He held talks with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, reaffirming the long-standing friendship and cultural ties between India and Jamaica. “India and Jamaica are bound by a friendship shaped by history and enriched by cultural linkages. Our partnership continues to grow with a deep commitment to collective progress,” PM Modi said.

He also met Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, noting the rapidly expanding bilateral cooperation in water resources, energy, technology, and innovation. “We will keep working to deepen trade and investment linkages in the times to come,” he added.

PM Modi further engaged with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, reviewing the full range of India-South Africa partnerships. The discussions focused on enhancing commerce, culture, investment, technology, skilling, AI, and critical minerals cooperation. He congratulated President Ramaphosa on South Africa’s successful G20 Presidency.

Additionally, the Prime Minister participated in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting. He emphasized the need for closer coordination among IBSA nations in combating terrorism, calling for zero tolerance of double standards in counterterrorism efforts. PM Modi proposed institutionalizing the IBSA National Security Advisor (NSA) level meeting to strengthen cooperation in national security matters.

Through these engagements, PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to responsible technology adoption, sustainable development, and the strengthening of global partnerships across economic, security, and technological domains.

This day’s meetings highlighted India’s proactive role in shaping global policies on critical technologies, AI ethics, and international collaboration, while simultaneously deepening bilateral and multilateral ties across continents.
