Harmer’s 6-37 Powers South Africa to Historic 408-Run Win Over India, Completes 2-0 Series Sweep
Guwahati, Nov 2025 : Off-spinner Simon Harmer delivered a masterclass, claiming 6 for 37, as South Africa crushed India by 408 runs at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, sealing a dominant 2-0 Test series sweep. The result not only gave the Proteas their first Test series win in India since 2000, but also handed India their heaviest-ever defeat at home by runs.
Chasing a monumental target of 549, India were bowled out for 140 on the final day. Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who fought a lonely battle, top-scored with 54, while the rest of the batting crumbled against relentless South African spin led by Harmer and Keshav Maharaj.
A Record-Breaking Triumph
South Africa, the reigning World Test Championship winners, outplayed India in every department from the moment they won the toss. The victory margin of 408 runs is now South Africa’s biggest against India in Test cricket, further cementing their dominance throughout the tour.
The defeat deepens India’s recent struggles at home in red-ball cricket, following their 3-0 series loss to New Zealand last year, raising pressing questions about their declining fortress-like reputation.
India Collapse Despite Jadeja’s Defiance
The afternoon session triggered India’s rapid collapse. B. Sai Sudharsan, who showed grit in the morning session, fell early when he pushed forward to Senuran Muthusamy and edged to slip—where Aiden Markram completed his eighth catch of the match, equalling a Test record for most catches by a fielder (non-wicketkeeper).
Jadeja provided some resistance, attacking both spinners with sweeps and pulls. He reached his half-century in style by lofting Maharaj over midwicket for six. But South Africa kept chipping away.
Washington Sundar became Harmer’s fifth victim when he edged a quicker delivery, with Markram snapping up his record ninth catch of the match. Harmer soon struck again, dismissing Nitish Kumar Reddy via a glove-edge attempted reverse sweep.
Jadeja’s dismissal effectively ended India’s hopes. Charging down the pitch to Maharaj, he was beaten in flight and stumped sharply by Kyle Verreynne.
South Africa Seal Victory in Style
The final wicket came in spectacular fashion. Marco Jansen ran back and completed a stunning one-handed catch to dismiss Mohammed Siraj off Maharaj’s bowling, triggering wild celebrations from the visitors. It marked only the second time South Africa have beaten India in a Test series on Indian soil.
