India Slide to Fifth in WTC Standings After Record 408-Run Defeat to South Africa
New Delhi, Nov 2025 : India suffered a significant setback in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 standings after South Africa completed a dominant 2–0 series sweep, handing the hosts a crushing 408-run defeat in the second Test at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
The emphatic victory gave South Africa only their second-ever Test series win on Indian soil, their first since the historic triumph in 2000. For India, the margin of defeat marked their heaviest loss by runs in Test cricket, raising major concerns about form, consistency and home dominance in the early stages of the WTC cycle.
WTC Standings Take a Sharp Turn
South Africa’s clinical performance has dramatically reshaped the WTC points table. With 36 points from four matches and a points percentage (PCT) of 75, the defending World Test Champions consolidated their position in second place, trailing only Australia.
India, meanwhile, slipped to fifth after being overtaken by Pakistan, with their PCT falling to 48.15. The back-to-back defeats at home serve as a major blow to India’s hopes of gaining early momentum in the cycle.
Match Summary: South Africa Dominate from Start to Finish
The deciding Test in Guwahati initially offered India a glimmer of hope, but South Africa’s middle order reversed the tide. Senuran Muthusamy’s resilient 109 and Marco Jansen’s commanding 93 revived the visitors from a wobbly start to post a formidable 489 in the first innings.
Jansen then wreaked havoc with the ball, returning exceptional figures of 6/48 as India collapsed for 201, failing to mount a substantial first-innings response.
Opting not to enforce the follow-on, South Africa batted again to stretch their lead beyond India’s reach. A composed 94 from Tristan Stubbs anchored their second innings to 260/5 declared, placing the match firmly out of India’s grasp.
Harmer Stars Again; India Fold Under Pressure
Off-spinner Simon Harmer, who had starred in the first Test in Kolkata, continued his remarkable run. After taking 3/64 in the first innings, he tore through India on the final day with a brilliant 6/37, leaving the hosts with no room to recover.
Despite brief resistance from Sai Sudharsan and a fighting 54 from Ravindra Jadeja, India could not withstand the relentless pressure. Regular breakthroughs from the South African attack ensured that India folded for 140, sealing the massive victory.
Adding to South Africa’s all-round excellence, Aiden Markram took two outstanding slip catches, exemplifying the disciplined and sharp fielding that underpinned the visitors’ triumphant tour.
