CBI Concludes Investigation in R.G. Kar Medical College Financial Corruption Case
Kolkata, Dec 2025 : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has completed its probe into the financial corruption case at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, a source confirmed on Wednesday. The agency filed an additional chargesheet earlier this week, which officials have clarified is the “final chargesheet” in the case. Relevant documents have already been submitted to the court.
While past cases have occasionally seen multiple chargesheets even after the so-called final one, CBI sources emphasized that Monday’s submission marks the conclusion of the investigation. The Special CBI Court noted in Wednesday’s hearing that since the trial had already begun based on a previously accepted chargesheet, accepting an additional chargesheet under the same section posed no legal issues.
The court will now issue summons to the two individuals named in the additional chargesheet. These include Akhtar Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of R.G. Kar Medical College, and Shashikant Chandak, a new accused in the case. Ali had initially raised corruption allegations against the then-principal of the hospital, Sandip Ghosh, and his name also features in the final chargesheet. The court has scheduled the issuance of summons to Akhtar Ali on December 16, and summons will also be sent to Chandak.
Earlier, the CBI had filed chargesheets against several others in connection with the financial irregularities at the hospital. These included Sandip Ghosh, Biplab Singh, Suman Hazra, Afsar Ali Khan, and Ashish Pandey. All five had been arrested during the course of the investigation.
According to sources, the probe revealed that Sandip Ghosh and Akhtar Ali were primarily involved in the alleged corruption. The additional chargesheet expands the list of accused, reflecting the detailed findings of the investigation.
The completion of the investigation brings the case a step closer to trial, with the court set to handle proceedings for the newly named accused alongside those already facing trial. The final chargesheet submitted by the CBI provides a comprehensive account of the financial irregularities at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, which has been under scrutiny since the initial allegations surfaced.
The case continues to attract attention due to the involvement of senior hospital officials and the high-profile nature of the institution, making the upcoming trial closely watched by both the public and the medical fraternity.
