Danish Government Allocate Funds For the Purchase of a Ship to Strengthen the Monitoring of Critical Underwater Infrastructure.
Copenhagen; December 2025: Based on updated military recommendations from the Danish Defence Command, the government and the conciliation group have decided to allocate funds to acquire a ship to strengthen the surveillance of critical underwater infrastructure. Based on a revised analysis, the Danish Defence Command has assessed that the capacity should be purchased rather than leased.
“With the expected acquisition of a ship for underwater and seabed surveillance, we are strengthening our ability to monitor and protect the underwater infrastructure on which Denmark is deeply dependent. This is an area where threats are constantly evolving, and where we must be able to respond quickly and independently. We are therefore following the Defence Command’s recommendation to own a dedicated capacity, so that we maintain the necessary freedom of action and operational control and thereby strengthen the Defence’s combat power as much as possible“, says Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen.
Ownership over leasing offers a number of operational advantages, including the ability to provide full freedom to make necessary modifications to the vessel, greater operational control in conflict areas and during military operations, and the ability to initiate a procurement process immediately.
“With the right systems and sensors, our ability to secure critical underwater infrastructure is strengthened. It is a task that we solve in cooperation with other authorities. The Defence’s ability to detect, classify and neutralize deviations from the normal picture in the water column and on the seabed is improved with the agreement. And that is good for the Defence and for the entire Kingdom“, says Chief of Defence General Michael W. Hyldgaard
The financing is primarily through funds already allocated under the Acceleration Fund and via a limited drawdown on the Ministry of Defence’s existing financial framework.
