Kabir Signals New Political Front, Eyes AIMIM-Led Alliance to Challenge TMC and BJP

Kolkata, Dec 7: Suspended Trinamool Congress leader Humayun Kabir on Sunday announced his plans to float a new political party later this month and confirmed his intent to forge an electoral alliance with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) ahead of future elections in West Bengal. Kabir said the new outfit will be formally launched on December 22.

Declaring AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi as a key ally in his political roadmap, Kabir said discussions have already taken place. “My new party will be allied with AIMIM. I have spoken to Owaisi saheb, and he has invited me to Hyderabad for detailed talks. The alliance is confirmed from my side,” he said.

Kabir also extended an open invitation to the CPIM, Congress and the Indian Secular Front (ISF) led by Naushad Siddiqui to join the proposed alliance. According to him, the objective is to present a united front against the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal and the Bharatiya Janata Party at the Centre.

“Our aim is to defeat both Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress in the state and the BJP at the national level. If all secular and opposition forces come together, we can seriously challenge them. Our initial target is 135 Assembly seats in West Bengal,” Kabir claimed, adding that seat-sharing arrangements would be discussed once the alliance takes formal shape.

Kabir’s statement comes a day after he laid the foundation stone for the construction of a Babri Masjid at Beldanga in Murshidabad district, a move that has sparked political discussions and reactions across party lines.

In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, the CPIM-led Left Front and the Congress had contested in alliance with the newly formed Indian Secular Front. However, the alliance failed to make a political impact, with the Left and Congress failing to win a single seat, while ISF managed to secure only one seat in the 294-member Assembly.

Since then, political equations in the state have shifted, with the Left and Congress now choosing to part ways and contest independently. Against this backdrop, Kabir’s proposal for a multi-party alliance faces significant uncertainty.

Sources within the CPIM have already ruled out any possibility of aligning with Kabir’s proposed party. Senior Left leaders privately alleged that Kabir is “indirectly helping the BJP,” an accusation that could further complicate his alliance-building efforts.

With his party yet to be officially launched and major opposition players expressing reluctance, the political viability of Kabir’s proposed grand alliance remains to be tested in the coming weeks.
