PM Modi, US President Trump Discuss Strengthening India-US Ties in Telephonic Call
New Delhi, Dec 2025 : In a notable diplomatic development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with US President Donald Trump on Thursday, during which both leaders discussed the progress of bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments.
The conversation focused on the importance of sustaining momentum in joint efforts to enhance trade and economic cooperation. Following the call, PM Modi posted on X, “Had a very warm and engaging conversation with President Trump. We reviewed the progress in our bilateral relations and discussed regional and international developments. India and the US will continue to work together for global peace, stability, and prosperity.”
During the discussion, the leaders reviewed the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and expressed satisfaction over the steady strengthening of cooperation across various sectors, including defence, energy, critical technologies, and security. They highlighted the implementation of the India–US COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology), emphasizing priority areas that will drive collaboration in the 21st century.
The leaders also exchanged views on key regional and global developments and agreed to coordinate closely on shared challenges while advancing mutual interests. The call underscored the commitment of both nations to work together to enhance strategic, economic, and security ties, building on years of sustained collaboration.
This development follows statements made by former President Trump in November regarding his plans to visit India. During a press conference at the White House on November 6, Trump praised PM Modi as a “great man” and a personal friend, adding, “He wants me to go there. We’ll figure that out. I’ll go… He’s a great man, and I’ll be going.” Trump also recalled his previous visit to India in 2020, highlighting the positive engagement during that trip.
On trade matters, Trump noted that negotiations with India were progressing “very well” and mentioned that India has “largely stopped buying oil from Russia,” reflecting ongoing economic discussions.
The White House has also emphasized the strong personal rapport between the two leaders. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, responding to questions on November 4, noted that Trump “feels very positive and strongly” about the India-US relationship and speaks with Prime Minister Modi “pretty frequently.” Leavitt added that the US trade team is in “serious discussions” with India regarding key trade issues, highlighting the commitment to advance economic and commercial cooperation.
The telephonic interaction between PM Modi and President Trump reinforces the robust strategic and diplomatic partnership between India and the United States, covering a wide array of sectors from defence to technology, while also reflecting the personal camaraderie between the two leaders.
