PM Modi Receives Warm Welcome from Indian Community in Jordan as Bilateral Visit Commences
Amman, Dec 15 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi was greeted with enthusiasm and pride by members of the Indian community in Amman, Jordan’s capital, on Monday as he began his two-day bilateral visit to the country. Carrying Indian flags and chanting “Modi Modi” along with “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” the Indian diaspora gave the Prime Minister a rousing reception outside his hotel. Children who had gathered at the venue were warmly greeted by PM Modi, who also interacted with them, sharing moments of cultural connection and camaraderie. The celebrations included a vibrant cultural performance that showcased India’s rich heritage.
Expressing his gratitude, PM Modi posted on X, “Deeply touched by the warm welcome extended by the Indian community in Amman. Their affection, pride in India’s progress, and strong cultural bonds reflect the enduring connection between India and its diaspora. Also grateful for the role the diaspora continues to play in strengthening India-Jordan relations.”
PM Modi also acknowledged the gracious reception at the airport, noting, “Landed in Amman. Thankful to Mr. Jafar Hassan, Prime Minister of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan for the warm welcome at the airport. I am sure this visit will boost bilateral linkages between our nations.” The Prime Minister was personally welcomed at the airport by Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, in a gesture reflecting the close ties and mutual respect between the two nations.
This visit marks PM Modi’s first full-fledged bilateral engagement in Jordan, coming 37 years after the previous such visit. He had transited through Jordan in February 2018 while en route to the State of Palestine, during which he was accorded exceptional courtesies by King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein, making the transit more than just a stopover.
During his stay, PM Modi is scheduled to hold discussions with King Abdullah II, with both leaders expected to review the full spectrum of India-Jordan relations. They will also exchange views on regional and global issues, reflecting a long-standing commitment to political, economic, and security cooperation. The visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Jordan, providing a timely opportunity to strengthen bilateral engagement, explore new avenues for trade and cooperation, and reaffirm shared goals of regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
“This historic visit will mark 75 years of establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries. During my visit, I will hold detailed discussions with His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein, H.E. Mr. Jafar Hassan, Prime Minister of Jordan, and will also look forward to engagements with His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II. In Amman, I will also meet the vibrant Indian community who have made significant contributions to India–Jordan relations,” PM Modi said in his departure statement.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Secretary (South), Neena Malhotra, highlighted the enduring trust and cooperation between India and Jordan. “India and Jordan share warm and friendly relations marked by mutual trust and goodwill. The relationship spans political, economic, defence, and people-to-people sectors,” she said. Malhotra added that the bilateral understanding at the leadership level has been reinforced through multiple meetings between the two leaders, including four meetings since 2018, with the most recent on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Italy in June 2024.
She further noted that both leaders maintain regular telephonic communication and recently held discussions in April 2025 following the Pahalgam terror attacks, during which King Abdullah II strongly condemned the attacks, reaffirmed his support for India’s fight against terrorism, and emphasized cooperation on counter-terrorism initiatives such as the Aqaba Process.
The visit, therefore, not only strengthens the historical and cultural links between India and Jordan but also reinforces strategic cooperation in areas such as security, trade, and regional diplomacy. PM Modi’s engagements in Amman are expected to set the tone for deeper collaboration and mutual growth, while celebrating the enduring contribution of the Indian diaspora in fostering strong bilateral relations.
