BJP Accuses Mamata Banerjee of Fueling Communal Politics Ahead of Elections

New Delhi, Dec 2025 : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of attempting to provoke communal tension between Hindu and Muslim communities ahead of the state assembly elections next year. BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia alleged that Banerjee and her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), were deliberately engaging in divisive politics because they feared defeat in the upcoming polls.

The BJP’s allegations came after TMC MLA Madan Mitra reportedly stated that Lord Ram was not Hindu but Muslim. Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters, Bhatia claimed that the remarks had deeply offended millions of Hindus and questioned Banerjee’s silence on the matter. He asked whether the Chief Minister had taken any action against Mitra, including expulsion from the party or filing an FIR.

Bhatia further claimed that TMC leaders were making “objectionable remarks” about Hindu beliefs and deities at Banerjee’s direction, accusing her of trying to appease a particular religious community for political gains. He said this strategy reflected her growing concern over the ruling party’s political future in the state.

The BJP spokesperson also reminded that maintaining law and order in West Bengal is Banerjee’s responsibility, as she heads the state’s Home Department. He said that if her government truly believed in peace and neutrality, swift action would have been taken against statements that could disrupt communal harmony.

Bhatia accused Banerjee of consistently disrespecting Hindu sentiments and recalled previous instances to support his claim. He cited the 2019 incident when Banerjee had reacted angrily to people chanting “Jai Shri Ram,” and how she had described the Mahakumbh event in a way that allegedly hurt religious sentiments.

Calling her approach “appeasement politics,” Bhatia questioned why Banerjee and other TMC leaders avoided making critical statements about other religions if their intent was not politically motivated. He challenged the state government to prove its neutrality by acting against remarks that could harm social unity.

As political temperatures rise in West Bengal ahead of the 2026 elections, the exchange between the BJP and TMC is expected to intensify. For now, the controversy over Madan Mitra’s remarks has added another spark to an already heated political climate in the state.
