Telangana to Become a Role Model in Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Rolls, Says CEC Gyanesh Kumar
Hyderabad, Dec 2025 : Chief Election Commissioner of India, Gyanesh Kumar, on Sunday said Telangana is set to become a benchmark for the entire country in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Addressing booth-level officers (BLOs) in Hyderabad, he confirmed that Telangana would be included in the next phase of SIR, aimed at comprehensive voter list purification.
Highlighting the recently concluded SIR in Bihar as a model, the CEC stated that the process there was executed flawlessly. “Approximately 7.5 crore voters participated in the recent Assembly elections, and not a single complaint was recorded during the entire exercise. There was no need for repolling or recounting,” he said, commending the Bihar BLOs for their dedication and hard work.
Calling BLOs the backbone of India’s electoral system, Gyanesh Kumar emphasized that the success of the SIR process depends on their commitment. “The entire world watches with interest how India conducts its elections,” he noted, adding that Telangana’s participation in SIR would elevate its election administration to a new era.
Pointing out Telangana’s large geographic area—larger than that of Canada—the CEC underlined the scale of the upcoming electoral revision. He also spoke about voter participation trends, observing that urban areas often witness low turnout due to voter apathy, while rural voters enthusiastically stand in queues, setting an example for the nation.
The Chief Election Commissioner reaffirmed that all elections in India are conducted strictly in accordance with the law, and adherence to election regulations is mandatory. He further highlighted India’s international recognition, revealing that the Election Commission of India joined the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) in 1995 and, three decades later, became its chairman—a testament to India’s credibility and innovative approach in election management.
With over 90 crore voters spread across 28 states and eight union territories, the CEC described Indian democracy as one of the largest and most complex in the world. He emphasized that maintaining accurate and updated electoral rolls is critical to ensuring free and fair elections for such a vast electorate.
In his introductory remarks, State Chief Electoral Officer C. Sudarshan Reddy provided key statistics for Telangana, detailing the total number of voters, districts, Assembly constituencies, and parliamentary constituencies. Additional Chief Electoral Officer Vasam Venkateswara Reddy, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, Senior Deputy CEC Pawan Kumar Sharma, Rangareddy District Collector Narayana Reddy, and several other officials were also present at the meeting.
The CEC’s address underlined the importance of the SIR process in strengthening electoral integrity and enhancing voter participation, while also recognizing the pivotal role played by BLOs in ensuring that voter lists are accurate, comprehensive, and reliable. Telangana’s upcoming SIR is expected to set a benchmark for other states, reinforcing India’s position as a global leader in election management.
