Strong Winds and Security Alert Disrupt Operations at San Francisco International Airport

San Francisco, Dec 2025 : Air travel at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) faced major disruptions on Friday as strong winds and a temporary security-related closure at Terminal 1 led to hundreds of flight delays and cancellations, causing inconvenience to passengers during a busy travel period.

According to data from aircraft tracking website FlightAware, at least 432 flights were delayed at the airport, with the majority affecting arriving services. In addition, 26 flights were canceled altogether. The disruptions were largely attributed to adverse weather conditions, particularly high winds, which affected runway operations and aircraft scheduling throughout the day.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that incoming flights were experiencing significant delays, with average arrival wait times stretching to approximately one hour and 44 minutes. Officials said the strong winds reduced the rate at which aircraft could safely land, leading to a backlog of arrivals and knock-on delays for departures as well.

Compounding the weather-related disruptions, the departures lobby at Terminal 1 was closed for more than an hour on Friday morning due to what airport authorities described as “police activity.” The terminal was reopened around 10:45 a.m. local time. Local media reports indicated that Terminal 1 had been evacuated at around 8 a.m. after San Francisco police discovered a suspicious package. However, officials did not release further details about the incident, and no injuries were reported.

Airport authorities issued travel advisories urging passengers to allow extra time to reach the airport due to heavy roadway congestion. Travelers were also advised to consider being dropped off at the International Terminal and using the AirTrain system to reach their respective terminals more easily.

For departing passengers using Terminal 1 without checked luggage, the airport suggested drop-offs at other terminals, where less crowded security checkpoints were available. From there, passengers could access all gates through inter-terminal walkways.

The combination of severe weather and a security alert created a challenging day for travelers at one of the busiest airports in the United States.
