Washington, Dec 2025 : US President Donald Trump described a telephone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin as “very productive” ahead of a high-level meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday at Mar-a-Lago, Florida. The discussions focused on advancing a peace plan aimed at ending the ongoing war in Ukraine.

“I just had a good and very productive telephone call with President Putin of Russia prior to my meeting, at 1:00 P.M. today, with President Zelensky of Ukraine,” Trump said on Truth Social. He confirmed that the Mar-a-Lago meeting took place in the main dining room, and that members of the press were invited. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also confirmed the phone conversation between Trump and Putin, according to Xinhua news agency.

Trump and Zelensky’s talks centered on the framework of a 20-point peace plan, which includes a potential ceasefire timetable, a proposed demilitarized zone, management of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, territorial control in the Donbas region, and post-crisis security guarantees. Following the meeting, Trump told reporters that the negotiations were “very close” to a breakthrough.

“We’ve done very well. We’ve had discussions on just about every subject,” Trump said, calling the meeting with Zelensky “terrific” and noting that the two sides had “made a lot of progress on ending that war.” He emphasized the importance of multilateral coordination, saying that the leaders had also spoken with European counterparts to advance the peace process.

Trump listed contacts with leaders from France, Finland, Poland, Norway, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Germany, as well as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. “We thought it was appropriate to speak with them,” Trump said. “Our meeting was excellent.”

The discussions at Mar-a-Lago signaled a significant diplomatic step as the US seeks to facilitate negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, with the goal of achieving a sustainable and enforceable resolution to the conflict that has caused immense human and geopolitical consequences.
