Sri Lankan Cricket Mourns Akshu Fernando, a Promising Talent Lost Too Soon

Colombo, Dec 2025 : Sri Lankan cricket was plunged into grief on Tuesday with the tragic passing of former Sri Lanka Under-19 cricketer Akshu Fernando, nearly seven years after a devastating railway accident left him in a prolonged coma. He was 25.

Fernando had been battling for life since December 28, 2018, when he was struck by a train while crossing an unprotected railway track near Mount Lavinia Beach. The accident occurred as he was returning from a team running session, a routine part of an athlete’s life that tragically altered his future forever. He sustained severe head injuries and multiple fractures and was immediately placed on life support. From that day onward, Fernando remained under constant medical care, with his family standing by him through years of uncertainty, hope, and heartbreak.

News of his passing was reported by leading Sri Lankan media outlets, with tributes pouring in from across the cricketing fraternity. Renowned international commentator Roshan Abeysinghe described Fernando as a player and person who left a lasting impression. “He was truly a wonderful young man whose promising career was cut short by a cruel accident,” Abeysinghe said, recalling Fernando as a quality cricketer for his school and his final club, Ragama Sports Club. “A cheerful, friendly and thorough gentleman… We will miss you Akshu and remember you for the rest of our life.”

At the time of the accident, Fernando was regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s most promising young cricketers. He represented the country at the 2010 ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, where he made his mark on the global stage. His most notable performance came in the semifinal against Australia, where he top-scored for Sri Lanka with a composed 52 in a closely fought match that ended just short of a final berth.

A proud product of St Peter’s College, Colombo, Fernando enjoyed a stellar school cricket career. He captained the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 teams and served as vice-captain of the Under-19 side, earning admiration for both his leadership and skill. His domestic journey saw him represent respected clubs such as Colts Sports Club, Panadura Sports Club, Chilaw Marians and Ragama Sports Club.

His final competitive appearance came only weeks before the accident, when he struck an unbeaten 102 against Moors Sports Club on December 14, 2018—an innings that now stands as a poignant reminder of what might have been.

Fernando’s passing closes a long chapter of pain and endurance, but it also reopens memories of a bright cricketing future that once inspired teammates, coaches and fans alike.
