Daryl Mitchell’s Gritty 84 Lifts New Zealand to 300/8 Against India in First ODI
Vadodara, Jan 2026 : Daryl Mitchell emerged as the backbone of New Zealand’s batting effort, producing a composed 71-ball 84 to guide the visitors to a competitive 300/8 in their allotted 50 overs against India in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Kotambi International Stadium (BCA) here on Saturday. His knock proved crucial in helping New Zealand withstand a strong Indian fightback, especially during the latter half of the innings when wickets fell at regular intervals.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, New Zealand adopted a cautious approach early on. Openers Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls began steadily, respecting the Indian new-ball attack and focusing on strike rotation rather than boundaries. Their conservative start ensured stability, even though the run rate remained modest in the opening overs. As the innings progressed, both batters grew in confidence and began to find gaps with greater ease, putting the Indian bowlers under pressure.
The breakthrough continued to elude India as Conway and Nicholls reached their respective half-centuries in quick succession during the 20th over. The opening pair stitched together an unbeaten 100-run stand, marking New Zealand’s first century opening partnership away from home since 2019. At the 20-over mark, the BlackCaps were well placed at 104 without loss, having laid a solid foundation for a strong total.
India eventually found relief in the 22nd over when Harshit Rana dismissed Nicholls for a well-made 62, aided by sharp glovework from KL Rahul behind the stumps. Rana struck again two overs later to remove Conway for 56, bringing an end to a promising opening stand and swinging momentum back in India’s favour.
From that point onward, the Indian bowlers tightened their grip on the innings. Mohammed Siraj claimed his first wicket by dismissing Will Young for 12 in the 28th over, as New Zealand crawled to 153/3 after 30 overs, managing only 49 runs in the preceding ten. Kuldeep Yadav then added to the visitors’ troubles by removing Glenn Phillips for 12, further stalling the scoring rate.
Mitchell Hay briefly injected urgency with a quick 18 off just 13 balls, but Prasidh Krishna ended his cameo, ensuring New Zealand could not capitalise on the middle overs. Amid the steady fall of wickets at one end, Daryl Mitchell held firm at the other. The experienced batter absorbed pressure, rotated strike intelligently, and reached a patient half-century, anchoring the innings against a disciplined Indian bowling unit.
The death overs saw India tighten the screws further, highlighted by the run-out of Michael Bracewell for 16 by Shreyas Iyer and the dismissal of Zakary Foulkes for just one run. However, Mitchell continued to look for scoring opportunities until Krishna dismissed him in the 48th over, ending a vital knock that held New Zealand’s innings together.
A costly final over from Krishna allowed Kyle Jamieson and debutant Kristian Clarke to add 12 runs, enabling New Zealand to reach the 300-run mark and finish at 300/8 — a total that reflected both early solidity and late resilience.
Brief Scores: New Zealand 300/8 in 50 overs (Daryl Mitchell 84, Henry Nicholls 62, Devon Conway 56; Mohammed Siraj 2/40, Harshit Rana 2/65) vs India.
