Chief Minister Inaugurates Ginger Processing Unit at Sairang

Sairang, January 2026: The Chief Minister of Mizoram, Pu Lalduhoma, inaugurated a ginger processing unit at the Sairang Horticulture Centre under the Mizoram Agricultural Marketing Board’s (MAMB) Handholding Scheme today. The Horticulture Minister, Pu C. Lalsawivunga, was also present at the event.

The Chief Minister highlighted that after decades of progress, Mizoram is now achieving new milestones in agricultural processing. He praised the initiative by MAMB and the Horticulture Department for establishing the ginger processing unit, which he described as a significant step toward empowering farmers and women in rural areas.

“This project not only strengthens our local economy but also enhances the reputation of Mizoram as the ‘Ginger Capital of India’,” the Chief Minister said. He added that the unit reflects the state’s commitment to innovation, self-reliance, and sustainable agricultural development.

The processing unit is eco-friendly, operated entirely on an 18 kW solar energy system with support from the state government and Development Alternatives (DA), ensuring zero electricity costs and reducing production expenses. The unit produces high-quality, nutritious ginger products, benefiting local farmers and improving the overall productivity of ginger cultivation.

Currently, the unit generates employment for local women and farmers, providing stable income and fostering community participation. The operations include end-to-end management, from raw material procurement to production planning and quality control, under the supervision of skilled personnel.

The initiative began as a small project under guidance from the Uttar Pradesh National Rural Livelihood Mission and Development Alternatives, evolving into a full-fledged commercial enterprise. Local women now work collectively, gaining hands-on experience in modern processing and marketing practices.

The ginger processing line, installed at a cost of Rs. 71 lakh, was implemented with the private company Good Faith through an Expression of Interest (EOI) issued on October 17, 2024. The MOU between MAMB and Good Faith was signed on January 13, 2025, covering the building, transit godown, integrated pack house, manager and guard quarters at the Horticulture Centre.

The unit can process 200 kg of ginger per batch using electricity and up to 2,000 kg per week using solar power, ensuring large-scale production while maintaining quality standards. The technical aspects were overseen by Dr. David Fangzauva, Deputy Manager of MAMB, with costs carefully managed for efficiency and sustainability.

The inauguration was attended by Secretary of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Pi Ramdinliani, local MLAs including TBC Lalvenchhunga and Lalchhuanthanga, advisers to the Chief Minister, and other senior officials.

This project marks a major milestone in Mizoram’s agricultural development and rural empowerment initiatives, combining modern technology, sustainable practices, and community engagement to strengthen the state’s ginger industry.
